Season premiere

Last week’s premiere of “Lost hinted that this season will focus more on the evil (or are they?) Others than our original island castaways. The first few minutes of the season kickoff last Wednesday certainly held my interest: How the heck did those crafty Others build such a sophisticated community in the middle of a jungle? I mean, they’ve got indoor plumbing and electricity!
But then, after that outrageous beginning, the episode was pretty much all about Jack. I’ve got no problem with exploring new characters, but Jack? Again? If we’ve got to focus on one of the Flight 815 survivors, how about Sayid, Sun, Jin, Locke, Desmond or Eko, who were a big part of the cliffhanger finale and completely MIA in the premiere. It’s unfair to make viewers wait to see those characters for another week – or two, since it doesn’t look as if the fates of Locke/Desmond/Eko will be revealed tonight either.
And especially since I – for one – have had my fill of Jack’s daddy issues.
We already know he’s angry that his wife left him and that his father was a drunk. And to throw out the possibility that Jack’s father was his wife’s secret lover, only to trash that theory in the end, was a waste of precious script time. If we’re forced to endure another Jack flashback, how about giving us a bit more info on whether Jack and Claire are half-siblings?
I’m such a fan of the show’s smart writing that I’m still assuming there’s a master plan at work here. So I’ll hold off on a too-harsh review for now. But I’m crossing my fingers that “Lost won’t end up like “The Sopranos, stringing fans along and abusing their loyalty without a clever payoff at the end.
