And now for something completely different

January
11

Being an avid DVR-er (I don’t have TIVO, we use Cablevision’s DVR, thus the awkward phrasing), I only caught the premiere episode of “Dirt” just the other night.

This is FX’s new original series starring Courteney Cox (who’s still married to David Arquette, but seems to have stopped using the Arquette suffix in her screen credits).
What a freakin’ waste of an hour of my life. Anyone know where I can get an hour back?

Cox plays a Bonnie Fuller-esque editor of two top celeb magazines — one, called Dirt, is unseemly gossip; the other, called Now, is more happy-type gossip and fluff profiles. Everyone was completely unlikable and the only character with any seemingly redeeming qualities was the schizophrenic papparazzo. Seriously.

And having characters with few or no redeeming qualities isn’t a prerequisite for me to watch a show. After all, few characters on the Sopranos are decent human beings.

I dunno. I started fast-forwarding through it about halfway through. They were trying to do all sorts of neat camera-type tricks, too, but all that did was annoy me.

So if you still have it on your TIVO or DVR or whatever, save yourself an hour (it was commercial-free, so it really is an hour) and just hit delete.

I am a true TV junkie and can watch almost anything but this one was hard for even me to stick with. It was truly painful to watch that poignant moment when Courtney Cox and the Schizophrenic embrace, with tears in her eyes!!, over the dead cat. I promptly deleted it from TIVO. I don’t want any of my precious recording space taken up with this trash. I can’t believe FX went for this, they have had such fabulous programming – NIP/TUCK and Rescue Me being high on my TIVO list.

I’ve heard lots of good things about FX’s original series. My husband’s a big fan of The Shield. I am a TV junkie, but now that I have two little boys, I don’t watch as much as I used to, so I haven’t seen much of FX’s fare. But they always get such good ratings, I figured I’d give Dirt a try. I keep meaning to check out Rescue Me (love Dennis Leary!).

I totally agree on that dead cat moment. I was just fast-forwarding through half the show, hoping to find something that would catch my eye.

Thanks for tuning in, Beth, and hope to hear from you again!

I wanted to like this show. I really did. And it wasn’t totally beyond redemption. But it was just so dark, and the racier scenes just seemed more gratuitous rather than serving a purpose. I thought Courtney Cox was great though, and it’s a fascinating character whether it’s really based on Bonnie Fuller or not. I also really was impressed with Ian Hart as Don Konkey. Even the cat scene didn’t put me off too much (not that I loved it). Maybe the problem is everyone is so unlikeable. There’s no “good guy” to root for.

I’ll give it another try, probably, but my wife won’t.
