Takin’ a break

January
29

For some reason, the Cheers theme song kept running through my head all last week. Finally got over it last night with the rather dark “Takin’ a Break from all Your Worries” ep of Battlestar Galactica.
First off, I knew Baltar wasn’t a Cylon. It would have been way too obvious and it would have let him off the hook from having — inadvertently or not — helped commit genocide of his people and then presiding over their brutal occupation. Eick and Moore don’t go for the easy way out.

But what did Baltar whisper to Gaeta that got him all homicidal?

I have to admit, I’m not competely clear on why it upset Baltar that Adama & Co. were watching in on his convo with Gaeta. He was willing to help Gaeta on his calculations for finding Earth. Obviously, Gaeta was going to share that with the admiral and the president. I’m not sure why that mattered so much. Or was it just that he wanted to take the opportunity to remind them that Gaeta worked for him during the occupation and no matter what Gaeta said, he was at least in part complicit in what went on. If they could forgive Gaeta, maybe they could forgive Baltar?

The episode continued with the “Baltar as a Christ-like figure theme,” too. The vision of him from above, floating in the water with his arms spread, was very crucifix-like. And the Six in his brain keeps telling him he’s the “chosen one.”

And what about Caprica Six? Why didn’t they use her to help get info from Baltar? The “bonus” scene at the end added little to the ep; it seemed to serve solely to remind us that Caprica’s on Galactica and they’re not sure if they can trust her yet. Caprica naturally doesn’t want to be airlocked, as she’d then be resurrected and have to face a veritable symphony. Who knows? Maybe the Six model’s been boxed and put in cold storage like D’Anna. (Doubt it!)

The torture was another thing entirely. Do they lose some of their humanity by torturing him? Is it justified in the greater scheme of things because he was aboard a Cylon base ship and could potentially provide invaluable information to the Colonials? How’d he still manage to hold back so much information? He almost raised more questions than he answered.

I have to say, I’m thrilled the Lee/Dee/Kara/Sam drama is mostly over with. Dee is the definition of long-suffering. I mean, she put up with Apollo through his defeatist fat phase during the occupation of New Caprica. She’s really matured as a character, and I’m glad Lee recognizes how special she is and what a frakked-up mess Starbuck is. Of course, is this the end? Who knows? Starbuck may or may not die in a couple of episodes and, whether she dies or not, she won’t be in the final eps of the season.

Speaking of Starbuck, check this out. Let’s hope Katee Sackhoff never goes the celebreality route.
