Enough with the rejects, time for some real ‘Idol’ competition

Last night’s “Best of the Rest” episode of “American Idol” felt like an episode of filler. Probably because it was an episode of filler.
It wasn’t bad, mind you, but I’m ready for the next round of competition, the one that separates the good from the great and reveals some controversial cuts, usually involving constestants who got in trouble with the law or, to a lesser extent, can’t sing very well.
The so-called Hollywood round easily showcases the most drama in terms of in-fighting. In the initial audition round, auditioners are nice to each other because they are on camera for the first time and find comfort in other random individuals trying to beat out thousands for a spot in Hollywood. In the semifinals and finals, when public voting is a factor, the prospect of obnoxious behavior often seen on “The Real World” almost certainly guarantees an early exit. So the Hollywood round, in the middle, is the last chance for catty and wild behavior before the public has its say.
Already there have been some rumors swirling about some of this year’s Hollywood-bound contestants’ future on the show. If you’re up for a potential spoiler or two, click here. Without naming names, I can tell you that some of the supposed castaways pleaded guilty to marijuana possession, allegedly poured sugar in a guy’s gas tank and allegedly wouldn’t cut hair to meet “Idol” producers’ standards.
Because everyone knows that drug use, wild behavior and long hair totally don’t fit in with the music industry.
Put yourselves in the producers’ very expensive shoes. When it comes to bad or defiant behavior, where would you draw the line at contestant eligiblity?
