Yeah, you haven’t seen that since 1983

Thanks to RA buddy and Suburbarazzi-ite extraordinaire Chris for pointing out this little nugget of Office-y goodness over at the Best Week Ever blog.
It was a rare alignment of the planets that saw The Police reunite for the first time in two decades just days after fictional Police cover band Scrantonicity made its non-band-member’s-wedding debut during the Feb. 8 episode of The Office.
So some Dunderhead over at BWE decided to ask the question burning a hole in all our brains: who rocks your world harder? A compilation video of the two performances can be seen here. Readers were asked to watch, judge and vote.
“Scrantonicity DESTROYED Sting & company by a score of 357 – 4,” BWE writes. “It was a blood bath. And judging by most of the comments, it looks like The Police never stood a chance.”
I contend Scrantonicity benefited from a deeper setlist (one song for a 23-year reunion?) and more practice time (Kevin Malone’s troupe has had nine months to rehearse and two wedding gigs since Roy and Pam called things off.) But Chris had a theory to go with his news tip…
Don’t let Jerry Springer (or Steward Copeland, his lookalike) play drums.

For the record, Copeland’s my favorite drummer of all time. He’s probably the only drummer in rock that makes me say, “Hey, listen to how good those drums are!” when all the instruments are playing.
Still, this showdown was painful for me, as I love both The Police and “The Office.” Why must my children fight?
