Catchin’ up with ‘Lost’

Many thanks to my fellow blogger, Matt Sartwell, and others for filling in with their “Lost thoughts while I was under the weather!
I’m on the mend now, and finally got a chance to catch up with Wednesday’s episode. And the first thing that comes to mind is this: Has Locke taken dopey pills?
Because if I were Sayid, I wouldn’t take him on any more adventures. Something always seems to blow up when he’s around.
As Matt has already recapped, Sayid, Locke and Kate find the Flame station, headed by our old pal Patchy, now known as Mikhail Bakunin. Patchy tries to fake them out by claiming he’s a Dharma dude, but turns out he’s just another sketchy Other.
Easter Egg No. 1: Add another philosopher to the mix. Joining Locke, Rousseau, Hume, etc. is now Bakunin, who, “according to Wikipedia,”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Bakunin is a Russian revolutionary and anarchist.
So maybe Patchy is really a rogue Other, though that doesn’t explain his friendship with “Ms. Klugh.”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Others_%28Lost%29#Bea_Klugh
She’s definitely in touch with the Others, since she collaborated with Tom and some of the rest when she questioned Walt and negotiated the terms of his release to Michael last season. Which, as we all know, resulted in Ana-Lucia and Libby’s murder.
And Patchy murdered Klugh in what appears to be a predetermined order if anyone should capture them. Perhaps Patchy isn’t such a loner after all.
And what’s up with these Others and languages? Ms. Klugh knows Russian. Sheriff Isabel knows Chinese. Is there a Berlitz school located somewhere in the Others’ compound?
Anyway, getting back to Locke, there’s been a theory floating around that he’s in cahoots with the Others. I always pooh-poohed that one, but now I’m not too sure. Why on earth would he leave Patchy to play computer chess? How did he miss the secret cellar under the rug?
I mean, this was a guy who was Mr. Boar Killer in the first season. Now he’s been reduced to a whiny guy who can’t keep his hands off computer buttons. He’s not dumb, so maybe there is more to him than meets the eye.
Although the explanation for his actions could be less nefarious. Locke was a wheelchair-bound loser in his old life, and the island is his chance for a new one. Maybe he simply doesn’t want to be rescued.
Still, I’m waiting for Sayid to just smack him upside the head.
Another thing that’s been bugging me for a while is this: How big is this freakin’ island anyway?
The plane survivors never saw Others Island offshore, or found the Others Shangri-la on their own island, during their many excursions around the place? Rousseau never discovered Patchy’s farmhouse, or the “alarm system that’s in next week’s episode? After 16 years on this island, she’s had a lot of time to explore.
In short, I thought it was a great episode, though I wasn’t as high on the Sayid flashback as some of you all seem to be. A bit over-emotional, I thought, and unnecessary. We already knew “Sayid”:http://tviv.org/Lost/Sayid_Jarrah felt bad about being a torturer. Remember, he even helped save his friend/lover Nadia (the name of Patchy’s cat, wink wink) from the Iraqi interrogators.
But it was a nice mix of question-and-answer drama with the hilarity of the ping-pong game. Hurley the hustler – loved it! Also loved the producers’ nod to fans’ frustration with Nikki/Paolo by having Sawyer snidely ask Nikki: “And who are you?
Next up on the show: Two characters have a connection. We know it’s a Claire episode, so I’m guessing this is when they finally reveal the worst kept secret of the show: “that she and Jack are half-siblings.”:http://www.eonline.com/gossip/kristin/blog/index.jsp?uuid=5d625ed4-ba67-4b32-8b63-d29eea4d9c0a&page=3
Should still be a lot of fun! See you next week.
