‘Idol’ cut: Mr. Rogers returns to his neighborhood

After a disappointing turn on “American Idol,” former Christina Aguilera back-up singer Brandon Rogers went home after forgetting the words to his song Tuesday.
He wasn’t a bad singer—certainly worse ones remain—but we need to remember why middle-of-the-pack singers go home so quickly. If a singer isn’t an “Idol” voter’s absolute favorite or second-favorite of the remaining contestants, he or she is going home. No one is wasting time voting for a third-favorite. So a third-favorite is just as worthless to the voting as a least-favorite in that respect.
A fairer format would be to encourage voters vote OFF their least-favorite contestant, but that would make sense and improve integrity. But we all know that “Idol” isn’t about logic. It’s allegedly about “a singing competition.”
For the purposes of saving my pool, I can’t help but root for Sanjaya for four more weeks. He’s clearly the worst of the 12, but perhaps he can hang on a few more weeks with support from ‘tween girls, international voters, loyal Howard Stern fans following orders and visitors of VoteForTheWorst.com—which encourages readers to sabotage the show by rallying around the contestant the site picks.
After this week’s dull Diana Ross montage, I’m looking forward to next week, when it’ll be hit songs from the 1960s British pop invasion. British performers Lulu and Peter Noone are slated to make guest spots.
