Battlestar

To follow up from last night’s initial OMG about the season finale, I have this to say:

OMG.

Still. Again, I knew many of the things that were to happen — I’d heard about Starbuck’s return, I knew those four were going to believe they were Cylons (I’m still not convinced), I knew Anders and Tory were hot and heavy, I knew Baltar was going to be acquitted, I knew the admiral was the deciding vote in that ruling.

But Lee’s speech on the witness stand alone made Crossroads, Part 2, a compelling hour of television. He was right, so right, and that’s what made Adama, who considers Baltar to be nothing but a piece of garbage unworthy of life (debatably an accurate sentiment), vote for acquittal.

War is by definition immoral. Murder. Torture. Families divided. Children separated from their parents.

But many things are forgiven in war. And if you don’t forgive them, you can tear apart your society — or, in the case of the 12 colonies, what’s left of it. Forgiveness is necessary not only for those being forgiven, but also those doing the forgiving.

Lee did an excellent job reminding the judges, the president and the audience of all the illegal, immoral and just plain questionable actions he, his father, the president and everyone else had made since the colonies were attacked. He spared himself not at all for his cowardice in not wanting to go back to save those on New Caprica.

Still wasn’t good enough for the crowds, who felt they needed a pound of flesh to make themselves feel better about all the other horrible things. If only Baltar were convicted, that would mean everyone else was forgiven; after all, Baltar was in charge.

I still didn’t feel sorry for Baltar at the end where he has nowhere to go and nothing to do; I ended up liking Romo even more for realizing that he’d tricked Lee into helping because he knew that deep down, Lee was an honorable man, despite what he’d done in the past.

As for Kara, WHOA. I really could never believe she was dead. Nor could I ever truly believe she was a Cylon. I’d previously said, I thought she was going to find Earth; I just had no idea how or why. (Not that we have any idea yet anyhow.) It was really excellent to see her; I had to chuckle when she told Lee that it really was her, that she wasn’t a figment of his imagination.

As for the quartet of maybe Cylons — Tigh, Tyrol, Anders and Tory — I’m not sure I buy that theory. I know they believe it. But I think there’s another answer. Even though I’ve been on the Tigh bandwagon for a while now, I’ve recently found it difficult to believe he could be a Cylon, considering he’s been fighting them for 40 years. Did the Cylons even have humanoid forms that many years ago? Anders and Tory I find a lot easier to believe, given their backgrounds — Anders managed to stay behind all that time on Caprica without succumbing to radiation sickness and built a lot of credibility by leading the resistance on the planet; Tory sort of came out of nowhere after Billy died – what do we even know about her? Tyrol, I’m not so sure what to think.

But one thing I do believe — if one of them is a Cylon, all of them are. And if one of them is not, none of them is.

BTW, did you love that they worked the lyrics to All Along the Watchtower in to Tigh’s conversation with Adama? Amusing enough when they had the four each recite one line in the leadup to them finding each other, but it was very amusing in the convo w/Adama.

As for the dream shared by Roslin, Sharon, Six and Hera, I don’t even know what to say about it. I find it odd that Baltar didn’t share the dream, even though he was in it. Why did they share the dream? Roslin has some of Hera’s blood in her from the cancer treatment, Sharon is Hera’s biological (so to speak) mother and Six is Hera’s spiritual mother; is that their connection? But what did the frakkin’ dream mean?

So, we have to wait until next year to find out where all this leads us. There is supposed to be a two-hour episode in the fourth quarter of this year, then another 21 (or 20? It’s 22 episodes in all, but I’m not sure if the two-hour episode will count as one or two eps) in 2008. Will they split the season in two as they usually do? I hope not, as they’re making us wait an awfully long time for the new season.

Plus, don’t forget, there’s that straight-to-DVD movie planned that will fill in the time on the Pegasus between the destruction of the colonies and the rendezvous with the Galactica. That should help tide us over. Maybe.

So what did you all think? All you’d hoped for? Less? Too much of a cliffhanger? Not enough revealed? Do we know who any of the Final Five Cylons are or have been been led down the primrose path?

I think the way it's working out-according to an interview with Salon.com-is there will be a two-hour movie in the fall about the Pegasus…plus, 22 episodes beginning in January. It will probably be the show's final season, though it hasn't been determined yet, according to the creator in Salon.

I'm with you on the four of them not being cylons. The whole Bob Dylan shoutout really threw me. It means they obviously have some connection to Earth…As for Kara, could she be a figment of Lee's imagination (ala Baltar and Six).

I wish they gave us a little more, considering we'll have to wait 10 months now. What was the reason for the song? And why did those three characters share that dream?

That makes sense regarding the timeline of episodes. I'd heard, too, that it might be the last season. In some ways, that would be good, going out while still on top. But in other ways that'd be awful, because it's one of the best things on television.

That's an excellent thought about the Dylan song being some sort of connection to Earth. I hadn't really thought it through that much, but it now seems exceedingly obvious. ;-)

    I don't think Kara's in Lee's head. I think she's really there. Remember, she has a destiny.

  3. The Eye in the Sky

The Dylan song, it has been said, tells of impending confrontation or apocalypse. Perhaps BSG's humans are bringing apocalypse to Earth via our newfound four horsemen. I guess that would make Kara the second coming. That works for me.

  4. The Eye in the Sky

Well, that may have been too deeply religious. Let me lighten the mood by reminding everyone that anything is possible. For instance, BSG could encounter the USS Enterprise orbiting Earth during a search for Spock. Tempers (and egos) would surely flare between Adama and Kirk, people would be beamed all over the place, Tribbles would be underfoot. It could get messy.

Or, they could enter a time/space continuum and bump into the Kanamits en route to Earth. Could you see Baltar frantically screaming, "It's a cookbook!" ? Nobody would believe him.

The possibilities are endless. It could certainly provide fodder for a series to get us through the year – BSG: Lost in Science Fiction. I'll take all credit until they meet Mork and Mindy.

Enough already. Now back to your regularly scheduled blog.

    Hello, Eye…

I thought your insight on the Dylan song and the horsemen is quite interesting. A bit deep, but BSG gets rather deep, I think.

I love the idea of Adama vs Kirk. Adama would SO come out on top.

  6. The Eye in the Sky

Well, its no Rome, but its BSG is deep enough.

As for Adama vs. Kirk, I can't bet against James T. He has kicked too many alien butts to be doubted. And there's all that police experience as TJ Hooker. But then, Adama previously starred as a prison tough guy in American Me. That must have toughened him up, it was an ugly role. I like the matchup. Win or lose, Kirk gets the girl.

Let's have BSG roll out the boxing ring again (I enjoyed that episode). We can pit Tyrol vs. Scotty, Spock vs. Tigh, Gaita vs. Sulu, Uhura vs. Dualla, and Six vs. anyone Kirk bedded. Let's get ready to rumble.

This could go on forever. Or at least until I get a life.

    :)

  7. The Eye in the Sky

Just when I was about to go to bed…..

It sounds like Dr. Venkman is in dire need of the Aunt Jemima treatment. It's unfortunate that our ruminations have interrupted your homophobic little life, Pete. Good thing that our soldiers have fought to give you and me the freedom to read – and post – on any blog we wish. What a country, huh?

Venkman, if you can't find a Rush Limbaugh blog, maybe you should log off the computer and pop Saving Private Ryan into your DVD player. You'll feel much better.

My only other suggestion, of course, is this: Lighten up Francis or I'll tell Bill Murray you've sullied his good name.

While I'm here, I'll continue the BSG: Lost in Science Fiction ruminations. BSG lands on Earth only to find that its run by apes. The series ends with Adama using Heston's immortal words: "Take your filthy paws off me you damn dirty ape!"

Alfred E. Neuman, are you reading this?
