Office shocker: Who knows how it will end?

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor, but a one-liner in a USA Today article today about the premiere party for Blades of Glory has thrown me for a total loop.

The reporter touches base with several of the film’s stars, including Will Ferrell, John Heder and Amy Poehler, and gives passing mention to Poehler’s hubby and Arrested Development alum Will Arnett. But when he got around to bringing up Old Pammy that things got interesting.

“Heder’s love interest is played by Jenna Fischer, who was joined by a gaggle of her co-stars from NBC’s The Office. Earlier that day, the cast shot two different endings for their season finale, which Fischer says involves something life changing for Michael (Steve Carell) and Jan (Melora Hardin).”

Two different endings? Are you kidding me?

Let me just say that I’ve given a lot of thought to how things could wrap up this season, and the only conclusion that I’m sure of is that a lot of time has been wasted moving things along at a snail’s pace. Decisions made on the fly, like keeping Andy (Ed Helms) and Karen (Rashida Jones) around long after their tenures were supposed to end, make me wonder if there ever was a plan to bring some closure to the Jim-Pam saga left dangling since Casino Night like a loose thread on a wool sweater. And if there was a plan, how long ago did they go back to the drawing board?

There are only a handful of episodes left, and we still don’t know if Karen knows Pam was engaged to Roy when Jim kissed her? And what will Roy do now that he’s finally found out why Pam broke off their engagement?

If you told me in September that the writers were going to milk this storyline for the entire season I would have protested that they were above such clichÃƒÂ©d, sit-com silliness. Yet here we are, almost into April, and a sweet and compelling storyline has become a distraction that strains credibility.

But at least a viewer could take solace in knowing that the last scene had been filmed, and what would be done is done but for the editing. And now we find out that there are two endings?

Are they going to have us vote for our preference online? Do they even have a preference themselves? Do they care that they are toying with passionate, potentially unstable fans who’ve invested a lot of time and emotion into this show?

Boy, I’m just full of questions today, aren’t I?

Hopefully the next few weeks provide some answers – finally.
