Talkin’ it up… on the Barry Gibb Talk Show! (Or ‘American Idol.’ Either one.)

I can’t think of a better way to follow up the blockbuster “Idol Gives Back” week and Bon Jovi week than with the music of the Bee Gees.
The needle on my lie-detector machine just went hurtling into the next room. I mean, are you kidding me? If I wanted my harmonies to sound like Alvin, Simon and Theodore’s chipmunk throats being squeezed in a vice, I’d request that from the late Ross Bagdasarian himself, thank you very much.

Don’t get me wrong: I’ve been known to dance awkwardly to “Stayin’ Alive.” But since all four contestants are singing two songs this week, are there really eight Bee Gees hits, let alone eight hits the American public is dying to hear these contestants sing?
Perhaps it’s appropriate that three of the final four contestants are women, because some of those melodies are a good two octaves beyond the range of mortal men. Still, I admit I’m intrigued to see if Blake Lewis totally reinterprets “Stayin’ Alive” into a version that’s superior to the original.
Considering last week’s results, while Phil Stacey’s higher register would have worked well with this theme, at least we won’t have to hear Chris Richardson’s cheesy nasal runs up and down the scale for “How Deep Is Your Love?” Between Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, Jordin Sparks and LaKisha Jones, this is a solid final four.
But short of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake taking the stage at the halfway mark to host an impromptu Barry Gibb Talk Show, I’ll be looking ahead to next Tuesday’s theme—even if it’s Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch Week.
And now for something completely different: Here’s Simon Cowell as a game show contestant on the British version of “Sale of the Century,” long before he was an “Idol” judge. He’s rather quiet, but still got that I-own-this-set attitude.

I’m looking forward to how Blake mixes up the Bee Gees disco songs. That should be fun. It’s probably enough to move him on too I bet.
