Office chat VI: Life in the Office

There are dozens of Web sites right now posting detailed information, in the form of article links and streaming video, about the final two episodes of The Office.

Elyse Moretti runs one of them, which is kind of a problem for her.

“I hate spoilers,â€? Moretti, who blogs the show at LifeintheOffice.com, said. “It’s a really hard line. You want to provide the information for the people that want it, but you also don’t want to make it so appealing that the people that don’t want to see it will click on it anyway.”

So how does she fulfill her editorial obligations without spoiling the show for herself and others?

“It’s really hard,â€? says the Pittsburgh native who graduates from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland in two weeks. “Usually I’ll see it on another site, and I’ll get the link to the video and then try not to watch the video. Or sometimes I’ll watch the video without sound. I get a little extreme.”

(Part VI in a series. Part I. Part II. Part III. Part IV. Part V.)

litoforum.pngMoretti, who turned 22 earlier this week, took over the site known to many as LITO last month after founder Brian Stucki sold it to new owners so he could focus on his growing family.

She’s been an Office addict since tuning into the Season 2 Christmas episode with her dad.

“We just kind of fell into it, she says. “And then at the end of the show I just remember the scene where Meredith flashes Michael. We started laughing. It was the funniest thing we’d ever seen.

She’d take part in Office marathons at school and still watches every week with a group of friends.

But she had never taken her Office obsession online much beyond surfing various Office-related sites, including LITO. When the site’s new owners solicited help from readers, she decided her love of writing and her research background could meld well with her passion for The Office.

It’s going well so far, she says. Reader tips and contributions have been a big help, as has Stucki’s guidance via e-mail.

LITO was site she visited most often before she volunteered to take the helm. She made a connection there that she can’t quite explain, but she’s committed to continuing what Stucki began. The challenge is keeping it unique, particularly with so many Office-related sites out there.

So she plans to continue with staples like the audio clips and the Scranton Insider feature that were unique to the site. She has also maintained the focus on analysis over straight reporting. Readers appreciate that, she says.

And readers have plenty of opinions of their own to share, “especially with the relationships on the show, different storylines, and even as far as episodes, Moretti said. “Sometimes with episodes people will be like ‘That was the best episode of the season.’ And other people will be like, ‘That was the worst episode of the season.’ It’s really funny, but they’re all on the same site and they all respect each other.

As of this morning, the LITO Forums have generated 23,756 comments under 1,140 different topics since their launch in December.

Continuing to try and set the site apart, Moretti plans to initiate a bi-weekly podcast, hopefully joining The Office Alliance and That’s What She Said on iTunes.

Between finals, graduation and a June move to Oahu, Hawaii, of all places to be a special education teacher, she has her hands full. But in addition to her readers, she’s gotten a hand from friends and even from other bloggers.

Her graduation the next day will keep her from attending Office-themed events in Scranton on May 19, including appearances by Brian Baumgartner and Angela Kinsey. And since she’ll be halfway around the world, the Office Convention planned for this fall in the Electric City is out as well. (You can read about both items at LITO.)

But she plans to continue with the site for the long term.

In the short term, meanwhile, Moretti distinguishes herself as a big fan of Season 3, a source of much rancor among fans who think the Jim-Pam storyline has gotten off-track since the Season 2 finale. She just thinks it’s been a funny season, even if JAM remains an open question.

“I love that there’s not a resolution yet, she says. “Of course I’m still pulling for JAM in the end.

So any predictions for the remaining two episodes?

“I really don’t know what to think. I’ve got nothing really, she said.

She is loving the slow but steady emergence of Fancy New Beesly, but there isn’t a single character she says she relates to most. Everyone can relate to Jim and Pam, she says. And everyone has a Dwight or a Michael to contend with. At the same time, even those characters are human.

“It’s so many things, Moretti says of her passion for all things Office. “I always say it’s about the little things. It’s like the moments. You can watch the show over and over again and always find something new. I love that about the show, and also the awkward silences and the fact that it’s just so real. I think every fan can connect to multiple characters and you really start feeling for these characters. I love it.

Bonus round:

  • Jim or Dwight: Jim!

  • Jam or Karim: Jim and Pam

  • Dwangela or Jachael: Dwangela, they’re just funnier.

  • Poor Richard’s or Chili’s: Oh man, well Poor Richard’s has got the Scranton connection, but Chili’s is the new golf course. So it’s a toss-up.

  • Pink the color or Pink the person: Pink the color.

  • Stamford or Scranton: Scranton!

  • The Conference Room or the Parking Lot of Doom: The conference room. There’s so many classic things that have happened in the conference room, and that’s Michael’s place to get the team together.

  • Season 2 or Season 3: That’s a hard one. I’m actually really enjoying Season 3, so I say a tie. Season 2 was amazing, though.

  • Beet farmers or volunteer sheriff’s deputies: Both are cool, but the volunteer sheriff’s deputy has the badge.

  • David Brent or Michael Scott: Michael Scott. I’ve seen every episode of the British version, and I just can’t relate to David Brent, try as I might.

  • Jazz Babies posters in the office or JamaicaJanSunPrincess posters in the warehouse: I have to confess I actually like the baby posters. They’re cute.
