Someone from my office met someone from The Office

So I toil and sweat and obsess over the comings and goings of the Dunder-Mifflin gang, and it’s my coworker, reporter Swapna Venugopal, who got to meet John Krasinski on the steps of a downtown church last week.

I guess it’s all about being in the right place at the right time.

I can’t be jealous. After all, it was a nice Mother’s Day surprise for Swapna. And it’s not like I’d be real comfortable asking a guy not in a Mets uniform for his autograph. Jenna Fischer or Angela Kinsey, on the other hand…

Anyway, according to Swapna’s telling of it, she was driving around SoHo with her family, looking for a parking spot.

My husband, Sanjay, was at the wheel— thank God for that—because as soon as I spotted John Krasinski (no, I didn’t know that was Jim Halpert’s real name before Googling it) on the steps of a church on Sullivan street, I unbuckled my seat belt and half-opened the passenger side door. Sanjay sensed the immediacy of the situation, and dropped me off at the corner. I approached Jim, who was talking to another very familiar face on TV (whom I still can’t place) and asked if he would pose with me. He said “Of course,” and his very sweet friend took the picture and told me that it had come out great!

I’m impressed that Swapna, spotting a newsmaker, acted fast and wasn’t a bit star-struck.

But I’m forced to omit my very first celebrity photo credit. Could it have been Steve Carell, who plays the bonehead boss to Kraskinski’s slacker salesman? Or Robin Williams, who co-stars with Krasinski in License to Wed, due out July 4?

With all of TV-land in town for the upfronts, it could have been anybody.

Either way, it’s a nice Mother’s Day memento. All I have is my Dwight Schrute bobble head.

It was probably Rashida Jones, who plays Karen on The Office. They are often spotted around NYC together. Cute pic!

Swapna told me the person who took the picture was a man, so I don’t think it was Rashida Jones.
