‘Idol’ finalists get 3 more songs before championship vote

Blake! Jordin! Unfortunately not Melinda! This is… “American Idol” finale week!

blake_jordin2.jpgTonight’s the big showdown between the final two contestants before America offers its final vote to determine Season 6’s champ. The most captivating final, however, would have been Melinda Doolittle facing off against Sanjaya Malakar. That would have been the most talked-about final in “Idol” history, with implications far greater than awarding a record contract. Instead, Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks each will sing three songs in their quest for the crown.

Both will sing a viewer-written song, which almost definitely will be excruciating. A second tune will be one they’ve already sung on “Idol”—a tactic Sparks has already employed with the suddenly tiresome “I, Who Have Nothing.” A third ditty will be anything they want, assuming the show can get the rights to perform it on air. Look for both to fuse pop with hip-hop on that one.

This is traditionally the point in the show when gutsy finalists break out an a cappella performance, which would be particularly intriguing for both Jordin and Blake. Jordin has the richer voice by far, but Blake could prove that all he needs is a mic and his vocal percussion to wow the crowd.

Going into tonight’s show, I think I’m going to root for Jordin Sparks to win. Admittedly, this “Best Week Ever” debate, featuring Tarrytown product Greg Fitzsimmons, swayed my opinion to a degree. I will wait, however, to see what happens on tonight’s show before I offer my own prediction or rooting interest.

In the meantime, I’ll pose this question to you: Who was your favorite Season 6 contestant to make the Top 24, but not the Top 3? Explain your answer.

Hey Chris…love your writing!! Re tonite’s A/I…....since Melinda, by far the most talented of the crew, was somehow voted off last week (I guess the little teeny-boppers must be going to bed later than usual so they can vote for Blake (ugh) and Jordin (oy with the faces) , I’m boycotting American Idol and am officially “OFF” the bandwagon.
I don’t think I can sit thru another song Blake attempts to sing with his stupid beat-boxing or Jordin’s many ridiculous facial expressions!

I’ll have to check your column tomorrow to see who wins….I don’t care!!
