Tony Almeida

So today, Michael Ausiello spills the dirt on why we didn’t see Tony Almeida on Monday night’s season finale of “24.” Here’s a link to the column where he explains, but I’ve cut and pasted the info below:

Question: Hey, what’s the deal with no “long dead” character returning “with a vengeance” in 24’s finale, as reported earlier in TV Guide? I was all wound up to have Tony Almeida back, and no such person showed up!— Tom

Ausiello: OK, here’s the straight scoop: I know for a fact that producers very briefly considered bringing Tony back from the dead in the finale’s closing moments. Ultimately, however, they decided that such a twist would violate the premise of the series. And as cool as it would’ve been to have Tony back, I believe they made the right decision.

NO, THEY MOST ABSOLUTELY DID NOT.

How on earth would that violate the premise of the series? I’m so ticked off right now I can hardly type straight.

How would a twist ending violate the premise of the series? Let’s see: Teri Bauer dies at the end of Day One. David Palmer gets collapses after being infected with a biological agent at the end of Day 2. Jack gets abducted by the Chinese at the end of Day 5. Tony coming back would have been perfectly in line with the show’s past practices. Unless the writers doubted themselves and couldn’t make that slam-dunk comeback work? I don’t get these guys sometimes.

  2. Rickey Henderson

“Violate the premise of the series”?

How many different times did they bring back did Nina Meyers and Sherri Palmer? 15? 22?

And the one guy fans want back they refuse to acknowledge? Exactly what else is Carlos Bernard up to these days anyway? Bah. If we’re very lucky we’ll see the Tony scene on the season 6 dvd set, but I’m not holding my breath. They probably never even shot the scene.

After experiencing “Lost” break my brain last night, the finale of “24” is looking less and less decent.

I have to tell you, I’m madder about this today than I was yesterday when I first read it. Nina Meyers had more lives than a cat. The last time she cropped up, I swear I was like, “What?????!?!?!?!”

The idea that it would have been wrong somehow to bring back Tony is just so intensely insane there are no words for it. And, as you point out Rickey, the Lost finale last night was so intensely amazing (I’ll let Heather post her thoughts on it before discussing it too much) that it just further points out the extreme deficiencies of 24.

I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Well, OK, I guess I have to take it, but I don’t have to be happy about it.

I loved this season finale, this season was good. It wasn’t day 5, but it couldn’t have been there was no “good guys” to kill off. The show estabished new charactors, new relationships, and the ending was GREAT. I think they will bring back TOny for day 7, the season finale would not have been enough time to explain how or why Tony came back. And hopefully they bring back KIm Bauer, but make her be able to kick ass like her dad.

  5. Laurie (glockspeak)

That just pisses me off even more. I was so totally holding my breath for it, Tony, Prez Logan, even Michelle woulda been cool but the lame ass “dawn of a new dawn” insert retching much like jack did at the beginning of season 6 here After watching “Lost’s” season finale I felt like Morris after the drill. Blown away. And bring Kim back? WTF? That idiot needs to go away and stay away, far away; like hopefully die in some terrorist caused car crash in Canada so Jack has to go to Montreal and take on the Canadian hockey team one stick at a time.

  6. Amy Vernon

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I agree with you, Laurie. And if they bring back Kim, it should only be to kill her off. I’d rather see the cougar back than Kim.

Apparently, Logan is dead for sure, even though they didn’t really show it for sure.

Lost’s spectacular season finale just magnified the shortcomings of 24’s finale.

  7. Simon Stewart

This does not bode well, they had an opportunity to bring back Tony at the end of season 6. It will be a bit more dificult to swallow his return at the start of season 7.

Although, there is potential for hi return to have more impact at the start of a day.

Killing Tony off was a huge mistake, and the writers are just realizing that now which is why they were considering bringing him back. and the way he got killed off was even more disapointing Henderson wakes up from his “coma” and stabs Tony with his own needle? WTF were the writers thinking? Heck if they were just going to kill him off anyway He should have just died in the car explosion with Michelle or he is just so distraught by the death of his beloved Michelle that he just hangs himself in his hospital room even that would have been better. It would be nice to see Tony back but I don’t know how the hell the explain how he didnt die from that overdose of whatever that drug was without making it sound too far fetched.

  9. Zain Fazal

and was is Carlos Bernard upto anyway?

  10. Zain Fazal

    what is carlos bernard upto
    sorry

Killing Tony and Michelle off in the way they did was a huge mistake. And, look at the dynamics of the way they died: Every killing of the good guys and the bad, from day one up to the deaths of Tony and Michelle, had a plausible explanation. But, for the writers to create a “Bang, you’re dead” scenario with Tony and Michelle was, in and of itself, so counter-productive to the “premise of the series,” especially after the writers went to such lengths in previous seasons to endear them to the viewing public.

Tony and Michelle’s deaths might have been acceptable had there been a plausible back story to explain to the viewers the reason(s) for their death even if, as the creators suggested from time to time, that people sometimes die a tragic and unnecessary death in war. Like, okay, we got that, but why use characters like Tony and Michelle to drive this point home? All the creators have done is to create contempt for what used to be great series of story telling, not to mention great acting and directing.

The end of day 4 with Jack walking off into the sunrise was the end of the series. Days 5 and 6 are nothing more than aberrations.

  12. Amy Vernon

I thought Day 5 was OK, but Day 6 was a dog. Woof.

As for Carlos Bernard, he hasn’t done too much since 24, except the NBC miniseries 10.5 about a massive earthquake and being a part of the 24 video game that’s coming out in the fall. He also threw out the Cubs’ ceremonial first pitch of the season.

And, according to IMDB, he’s in a Eliza Dushku/Sara Rue pilot called Nurses: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0954277/

    bring back tony fox producers

  14. Seth

this show will never be what it was until they bring tony back. i even hate to see michelle gone but theres no way she could come back…but cmon, tony?? how did they even contemplate the death of tony? the only way i would wanna see tony die is at the end of the 24 series? like if it were 10 total seasons long, he shouldve died right at the end!

  15. Kathy Spence

Killing off Tony was the biggest mistake the writers of 24 could have made. Jack may be the star, but Tony was the heart of 24. His death ruined 24 for me. If they could figure out a way to bring Tony back, I would watch again.

  16. diamond

killing tony!!!!!!!!!!!!! and michelle off was the biggest mistake u guys could make- tony was the best actor there and he;s really cute but now i don’t like watching 24 as much as i liked watching seasons 1-2-and-3—i can;t beleive u guys did that!!!!!

BRING TONY BACK!!!!!!!!!!! BRING TONY BACK!!!!!!!!!!! BRING TONY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. t&m lover

I so agree But if Tony is on the bad side then why did he get on that side? Just because of michelle ’s death but I guess it will have to wait till the seventh season. But I will have to say out of all the realationships in 24 Michelle and tony ’s as to be the best. Tony and Michelle forever !!!! :)
