Heroes: Why didn’t Peter just fly away?

Yep, that’s what everyone’s been asking since Monday’s finale.
Tim Kring answers the question on TVGuide.com today.
Turns out the radioactivity “incapacitated” Peter’s other powers at that moment. But Kring admits that, basically, the viewer wasn’t supposed to be thinking about that and that the real reason was so that Nathan could save the day.
I also read somewhere today (I cannot remember where, for the life of me, but if I find it, I’ll update this and link to it) the theory that Hiro going back in time becomes the samurai hero that he grows up hearing about.
Now that’d be a cool twist.

Heroes sucks.
Diversity seems to have a big role in strong genes. Since powers are due to genetics (DNA/RNA), could a similar phenomenon to genetic diseases be in play? The power that he cannot proficiently mimic is the power which his closest genetic relative possesses?
