Flashing forward, flashing back

The latest news out there in Lost-land is that next season’s trademark flashbacks will be mixed in with flash-forwards, as we were treated to in last week’s mind-blowing season finale.
This is really good news, because we’ve gotten most of the backstory for most of our characters. I mean, what’s left to tell about Locke’s background? How he chose which wheelchair model to purchase (and manual or electric, a tough decision)? Or Jin and Sun  the goofy arguments they got in while planning their wedding (Sun: “Daffodils are the perfect flower for the centerpieces.” Jin: “I prefer tulips!”)?
Don’t get me wrong  there still are plenty of stories that could be filled in by going backwards (the rest of Jack’s tattoo, how Desmond ended up in the military and in prison, how Ben became the Others’ leader, why Richard Alpert’s never aged, just to name a few). But flash-forwards would be fascinating and could lend new insight into what exactly the island is and why it was or was not a good thing for them to get off it. And whose funeral Jack attended. (This is the best transcription of it I’ve seen and the theory about it kinda makes sense.)
BuddyTV had this to say about the next new info we might get:
The next big download of info on season four probably will occur at the San Diego Comic-Con July where the LOST crew traditionally holds a very telling question and answers panel. Comic Con has long been the origin of several LOST blockbusters; including season three’s forays into time travel.
And apparently the show starts production again in midAugust, so we should start seeing new spoilers about it around then. It wraps in March, a mere month after it starts airing new episodes again.
Sigh. I’ve gotta read all this insanity and speculate with my friends but not get any answers wait until February? I might actually go insane (no comment from those of you think think that’s a very short trip).
UPDATE: I missed this interview earlier. Damon Lindelof won’t confirm or deny the flash-forward and flash-backward thing, but has some other interesting things to say (and not say!)

That is an interesting theory that you linked to. Michael would certainly explain Kate’s “Why would i go to that” comment. At first I thought, it was Sawyer. After watching the episode a few times however (yes, I know I’m a dork), I really began to think that Ben was the man in the box…that he died in solitude and poverty away from his beloved island and that’s why Jack was so despondent…because, finally, all these years later, he could understand and appreciate Ben’s attachment to the island and feel a sense of longing/connection to the man he despised.
Am I the only one who thinks a “mix” of flashbacks and flash-forwards next season seems a tad chaotic? It seems like the producers are hedging their bets in case they can’t sustain the momentum of the flash-forwards.
And so, Amy The Wise, some questions:
1.Why is Kate not in jail in the future? Is she back with her Firefly beau, Nathan Filion?
2. Did you pick up on that moment when the new chief of surgery told Jack he was a hero “twice over? Was that a reference to any island-related matters?
3. Why are they torturing me by making me wait until February?
Hi Robert!
Thanks for tuning in. First off, I latched onto the Ben theory, too, but why on earth would he be living in NYC? I couldn’t really get past that one. This is the first theory that sounds like it makes sense. Of course, whether that means it’s true or not is another matter.
As for mixing backwards and forwards, sure it’ll be chaotic and confusing. Because Lost wasn’t confusing enough as it was.
And now for your questions:
1) I have no freakin’ clue. I wondered about Filion, too. If their being on the island really created an alternate reality for them off the island (is Jack’s dad still alive?) then maybe Kate never killed her stepfather and was able to stay with the man she truly loved.
2) I have to admit, I missed that “twice over” comment. Very interesting. I still have the episode recorded (trust me, you’re not the only Lost dork, and neither you nor I are even close to the top of that list!), I’ll have to go back and watch that again and see what it seems like. Hmm.
3) Hey, at least we won’t see three episodes, have two weeks of repeats, see six episodes, have 12 weeks of repeats (or a mid-season replacement like “Daybreak”) and get totally annoyed before it’s on the air again. I hate having to wait that long, but at least it’s all going to be on the air in a row, uninterrupted.
If you come across any other interesting theories, stop by and we’ll chat!
I think the twice over comment refers to him being a hero first by getting everyone off the island, and second for saving the lady in the car wreck.
I think the reason Kate isn’t wanted in the future flash is because they’ve gotten off the island, but ended up in an alternate reality. One where Kate is no longer a criminal and Jack’s dad isn’t dead.
They mentioned something about the casket belonging to someone that was neither Jack’s family or friend, which suggests that it’s either John Locke or Ben in the casket. That would jive with Jack’s feeling of remorse for leaving the island (both characters warned him against calling the freighter).
The whole flash forward revolves around Jack regretting not listening to Ben and Locke. So it makes sense if one of them is in the casker.
“casker” = casket by the way. Ugh, Rickey’s going to fuel up with some caffeine now…
