Office spin-off based on Dwight rumored

June

Maybe it was a bad combination of show tunes and an open bar, but something prompted Rainn Wilson to open up to a FoxNews.com reporter at a Tony Awards after-party about the possibility of an Office spin-off centering on his character, Dwight K. Schrute.

I’ve championed the never-too-much-of-a-good-thing stance in this space before, heartily endorsing rumored plans to make The Office an hour long and decrying NBC’s banishment of supersizing to the dustbin of failed TV gimmicks.

So, yeah, an Office spin-off sounds good to me—just not too soon.

After all, Dwight’s got a job already, at Dunder-Mifflin Scranton. I don’t need to see him realizing his dream of assuming despotic control of his own office, not before Dwangela goes public, anyway.

The Fox blurb—which I caught at OfficeTally and GiveMeMyRemote —references Frasier and Cheers. That’s fine, but for every Frasier, there’s a Joanie Loves Chachi. And for every Mork and Mindy, there’s an After-MASH.

Besides, I don’t know how well Dwight works outside the comedic confines of Steve Carell’s slapstick and John Krasinksi’s straight man.

Then again, The Office can’t last forever can it? Well, of course it can, but it won’t, especially not with its leading castmembers appearing in new movies all the time.

So the possibility of extending the show’s run this way is intriguing. And as long as there are office weirdos who by turns torture us with their idiocy and delight us with their prankability, there’ll be a place for Dwight in my viewing schedule.

I would watch it…. I just not sure if everyone else would.

Hmmm… “The Office” works really well. Regardless of whether a spin-off could work or not, I can’t envision The Office without Dwight. The chemistry of the show is what works. Messing with that just can’t be a good idea….

This CANNOT HAPPEN until The Office has run its course! Dwight is hilarious because he is always trying to usurp power that is clearly beyond his grasp! The show will run out of steam in its first season if they put Dwight at the absolute top. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it definitely shouldn’t call for Dwight’s early exit from The Office. NBC, DON’T RUIN THE BEST THING YOU HAVE GOING FOR YOU!!!

I would love to see a spin-off show with Dwight, I think he’s a great character! But I agree, not before The Office ends… he’s just too valuable to the crew there. The Office would not be the same without him.
