Jericho and the Internet

July
31

“The Internet is everything.”

So says Carol Barbee, exec producer of the resurrected Jericho.

Anyone who knows anything about Jericho and the effort to bring it back from the television graveyard knows that the Internet was vital to the cause.

First, many viewers watched episodes on the Web rather than on broadcast television.

Carol Barbee, left, is joined by, from left, Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James and Ashley Scott, during the CBS Press Tour in Beverly Hills, Calif. Associated Press photo by Nick Ut.

Then, viewers used the Web full-force to rescue their show. Important information about how to contact Nina Tassler and others at CBS was posted. Strategy was mapped out. Nuts were ordered.

See, even though it was the nuts that really did it (nothing like 50,000 pounds of nuts to make you change your mind), that many nuts never could have been ordered and shipped had it not been for the ability for people to pool their orders online and for Jeffrey Braverman to see the pattern, offer to folks to pool their orders and to keep a running tally on it.

Then you have Tassler providing regular updates to the fans using the CBS message boards.

Barbee had this to say:

More and more, shows are moving to the Internet. Every show will need to be a hybrid show, like we are, that lives online as well as on television and iPods and the rest of it. The Internet is where we’re all headed.

The whole cast and crew also are now blogging on the show.

Meanwhile, at Comic-Con, the cast (Skeet Ulrich/Jake Green, Ashley Scott/Emily Sullivan and Lenny James/Robert Hawkins) and producers expressed their thanks, once again, to their fans. According to BuddyTV:

Everyone recounted how and where they heard the good news. It turns out that Skeet relayed the good news to a number of people, including Lenny James, who was awoken in the middle of the night (he lives in England) by a call from Skeet. In Lenny’s words, after Skeet told him the news, they “both screamed like little girls.”

They didn’t provide much new detail beyond what’s already been announced about Season 2, but there were a couple of things that are either new or clarify what we’ve heard previously:
• The first episode will resolve what happened in the battle with New Bern, then jump forward a couple of weeks to the government occupation of Jericho.
• The government will be possibly the biggest character in Season 2.
• Esai Morales’ character is a government official sent to hunt down Hawkins.
