What’s the frequency, Kyle?

Kyle XY is picking up steam and took a few interesting twists last night.108959_d_270r_ful.jpg

First off, I have to admit I didn’t see Jessi as the attacker until Lori revealed that her Declan necklace had been stolen. Then it became exceedingly obvious.

Jessi’s evolution through the episode was interesting. She only lacked empathy because she didn’t know she should have empathy. As soon as she realized she lacked it, she was devastated. Filtering Jessi’s evolution through the prism of being a teenager is an interesting mechanism.

Kyle was far more innocent, as he was an empty vessel, so he really never was a teenager in the sense that Jessi is. They imprinted her mind with everything she needed to know about being a dangerous weapon as well as being a teenager and they’re coming into conflict. I tend to think her genetic stuff is closely related to Kyle’s and that her “evil” side is at odds with her greater being.

Emily’s ambivalence about Jessi continues to grow interesting, as well. She alternates between not caring because she’s too worried about her own daughter and feeling pity for this, well, creature who is masquerading as her younger sister.

Ballantine at Madacorp showed his complete evilness by threatening Emily’s family in a way that to an outsider couldn’t even be conceived as evil—picking up her daughter and dropping her at home. Even if Emily hadn’t spilled the beans on her young daughter at Ballantine’s office, how did she think they wouldn’t know about her family?

I knew part of the plan was to have Emily come on to Stephen, though. She’d been a bit too friendly to him so far. Next week, I’m assuming, she’ll really start to put the moves on. Of course, my brother-in-law totally thinks Nicole is a hot mama, so he’ll be at a loss to explain how Stephen could think about cheating on her.

Speaking of Stephen, Kyle’s ability to communicate with Stephen’s father was quite interesting. His abilities grow more and more supernatural each week. What I can’t understand is how Stephen so easily accepted Kyle’s ability without asking questions.

Which brings me to the other related question—how does the entire Traeger family not notice how Jessi’s naiveté is so similar to Kyle’s when he first joined their family? That struck me last night when Jessi asked a couple of questions of Lori that seemed very Kyle-like.

Other thoughts:
• Yay! Lori and Declan might be getting back together!
• Yay! Kyle and Amanda kissed!
• How awesome was the “next week on” clip where Jessi and Amanda were about to get into a catfight over Kyle? Meow!
• How is this show able to tread the line between sweet and mysterious without falling over the line into treacly or stupid? It’s really well done and the touching moments don’t linger so you don’t get annoyed when Kyle and Amanda make goo-goo eyes at one another. When it started, I watched Kyle almost for the kitsch. But it’s really grown on me—and grown into itself—and really is a quality show. Go figure.
