The Office’s Steve Carell makes me spend money I wouldn’t want to spend otherwise.
He got me to fork over $9 for Evan Almighty in which his performance was the sole highlight. I’ve got Office episodes on my iPod ($2 a pop) and my DVR (see bloated cable bill) that I also have on DVD ($32.99 at Target). And now I’m probably going to go see Dan in Real Life when it comes out Oct. 19.
Dan’s the story of a single dad of three girls who writes a newspaper column with the same name as the movie. Juliette Binoche, Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney co-star, adding to the appeal. Dane Cook (who doesn’t) plays Carell’s brother, the one dating the woman (Binoche) who Dan falls for. Peter Hedges directs.
Check out the trailer here.
And Pop Candy has some good observations on Dan here, i.e. “Dane Cook? Still not an actor.”
Sounds kind of sappy. But I’m going to check it out because Carell makes the shows and movies he appears in transcend. He made a sophomoric tale about a middle-aged guy’s pursuit of his first bedroom conquest a blockbuster with broad appeal. And he’s made a quirky workplace satire into one of the funniest shows on TV. He even made Evan, a Disney-esque morality tale with a bloated CG budget, a fun ride.
And Office fans aren’t the only Carell fans. Seems like everyone in Hollywood wants to work with the guy. The lineup for 2008’s Get Smart keeps growing and now includes Ann Hathaway, Duane “The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin (Carell’s Little Miss Sunshine co-star) and Masi Oka from Heroes.
Even if you didn’t have one of the funniest guys in show-biz recreating one of the funniest characters from ‘60s TV, you’d still want to check out The Rock and Hiro Nakamura on the same screen.
Here’s the Get Smart trailer, though the release date isn’t until June 20, 2008.
