W. Earl Brown, who plays Dan Dority on HBO’s “Deadwood,” just posted this disheartening update at 1:43 p.m. today on his MySpace blog:
Deadwood News
Current mood:disappointed
I had a meeting yesterday at an office complex where David Milch’s office is located. After completing my scheduled appointment, I stopped by David’s to say hello and see what was going on. Luckily, the Maestro was in. And well…
I had been very optimistic that we would be seeing more DEADWOOD episodes, at the least the two promised “movies.” I left David’s office with my optimism on the wane. It doesn’t look good, dear DEADWOOD fans, it doesn’t look good…
That ain’t to to say the horse is completely dead yet. It is just lying trailside foaming at the nostrils and heaving for breath. Once it is completely dead, I’ll try my damnedest to stop beating it.
Earl
Eek.
As Ian McShane’s “Deadwood” character, Al Swearengen, said at the start of Season 3: “Tell your God to ready for blood.”

disappointed

Dear Mr. Milch,
In your most recent efforts – Deadwood and John from Cincinnati – you channeled an overriding vision of the collective in which each character came to act and sometimes even understand their part in a larger organism. It was a holistic view of the world that enthralled and touched me beyond measure and one that I [foolishly] began to think of as your own perception of it. Imagine my disappointment to find out otherwise…! In reality, sir, you seem to adopt an approach that is far from the Kumbaya vision of “we are one” that you parlay so effectively on television.
Contrary to what you may believe, Deadwood is not yours to do what you want with. When you put it into the world in 2004, it assumed a life of its own and touched millions of people in myriad ways that you [and no one else] can begin to fathom. While you may not consider yourself under obligation to these nameless and faceless people, your pseudo-philosophy on life would dictate otherwise –
You have waxed lyrical on many an occasion of your interpretation of the artist as an emissary of god; if that is the case, sir, let me ask you think what happens when god’s messenger decides to shut up? You seem to have been so blindsided by your ego that you—to use your own lingo—have lost sight of god, and by extension, his people.
Despite what you may hope for in redemption through the creative process, there is not enough forgiveness in the world for you sir, and if John from Cincinnati is not evidence enough of karmic consequences, perhaps this NYPD Blue rehash that you envision as your next project will make it clearer. Please do us the favor of not repackaging your sentimental and increasingly incredulous vision of communal togetherness in this new series but rather, show us the world in which you live.
What you have done with Deadwood has affected your legacy more than you may think. Will I ever again have “Faith in Dave?” For trusting in you for so long, shame on me. For allowing me trust in you for so long – for lying about scripts that were never written and contracts that were never signed – shame on you!
Sincerely,
Deadwood fan
It’s just four hours – not a lifetime epic
Deadwood was the best show on Television hands down. To hear that you are not considering bring it back for closure is disheartening to say the least. We the fans loved this series and I for one was so upset when you just stopped writing-left us in the cold, to wonder how it would all turn out. I had the opportunity to visit the Black Hills and Deadwood was a treat to find. The town brought back fond memories for me because of the show!
So, Mr. Milch, give us closure, give us something to hang our hats on. I’ve bought the series and I need at least the 2 movies you promised if not (we can only hope) another season. HBO this is your time to stand up and continue with the great programming you are know for.
A Fan for Life,
Deadwood Fan
Milch, you are a &@#%&$@* LIAR!!!
You should be ashamed of yourself.
It’s 4 *@$@* hours! That’s all we ask.
You owe us that much.
Or did you make a deal with the devil?????
Deadwood elevates the viewer to a level of visceral creative participation that one so rarely finds. It is one of those once in a life time experiences that for once adequately and wholeheartedly reflects and magnifies the purity and integrity of the creative vision of art. This goes way beyond television – this is about the meaning and experience of art and theatre in the purest and truest sense. With Deadwood one sees all the elemnts of the mysterious creatrix beautifully and magnificently combined. From the writing and characterisation to the exemplary casting and quality of costune and set design. In short this is a masterpeice . Mr milch ,we, through you, were lifted up so that the mantel of the transcendental is temporarily drawn aside. To not give closure to these incredible and inspiring characters is an absolute sadness and an example of the state of this world of commercial and moral decline. . To leave us with such tantalising glimpses of the artistic is to leave us with half tastes, madness and failing sight. It is as if one has come across an unfinished Rome or a half written Beethoven’s fifth.
We , the fans, ask you to Move past this block and open the doors for us once again. This series deserves to find its natural end, because it is through the labour and fulfilment of your vision that the creative gods and us mortals are blessed.
