He’s only 35, but TV writer-producer Greg Berlanti has been writing quality dramas for 10 years.
Greg got his big break writing for teen-angst series “Dawson’s Creek,” and went on to create the well-reviewed “Everwood.”
Now, Greg—a Rye High School graduate—is executive producing not one, not two, but THREE shows on ABC this season.
He’s back for the second season of “Brothers & Sisters.”
He’s launching “Dirty Sexy Money” on Sept. 26 (which has the best title on TV!).
And he co-created “Eli Stone,” set to debut in the spring.
Greg took an hour out of his incredibly busy schedule—the man works 14-hour days, sometimes seven days a week—to talk to me about his upcoming projects.
That story will be in Sunday’s Life & Style section of the Journal News. It’s the centerpiece of our fall TV preview.
But I thought I’d give y’all an early listen to what Greg and I talked about: There’s audio clips after the break!
First off, I’ve interviewed Greg a few times throughout his career. And he seems as down-to-earth today as he was back when writing for “Dawson’s.”
He hasn’t gotten caught up in the whole Hollywood hoopla: He’s in the same house he bought after landing his first TV job.
Talk about humble. Check out what he says he’d buy right now, if he could buy anything:
Greg’s job is definitely long hours and hard work, but it has fun moments, too.
His mid-season show, “Eli Stone,” is about a ruthless attorney who starts having visions of George Michael.
(Yes, that George Michael … from Wham!)
Anyway, everyone told Greg and his partner, Marc Guggenheim, that they’d never get the singer to play himself. Turns out Mr. Michael is an avid TV watcher, and he loved the show’s pilot script.
Here’s Greg talking about the process of getting George on board. (And who knew the very British pop star was a part-time Texas resident?)
So support a local boy and tune into “Dirty Sexy Money,” and “Brothers & Sisters” (which premieres Sept. 30).
And don’t forget to check out my story on Greg this Sunday, when I also give a list of other locals involved with new shows this season.

Berlanti is definitely a super producer and “Eli Stone” is the BEST! great cast! Loved every epsiode and looking forward to the next!
Yes he is a super producer and thought provoking writer. More importantly he is a super genuine human being. I was good friends with his sister growing up in Rye and knew him (a little brother we all loved and looked after) then to be one of the nicest and most polite person. Last spoke to him about 10 years ago when he got his 1st break writing for Dawson’s Creek. He is someone that I or anyone is blessed to know. I’m so proud of and happy for him. Love you Greg!
