Curb your slumber

Warning: Spoilers ahead for 40 percent of last night’s premiere of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Right about now, on a Monday morning, is the time I’d normally be giving you my take on the previous night’s airing of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Unfortunately, neither Curb nor I, the resident Curb blogger, have gotten off to a very good start to the season. Mea culpa: I fell asleep about 12 minutes into the premiere episode. But it’s not my fault.
Nope, I’m blaming a weak opening bit about a noisy smoke alarm and a predictable set-up to Larry’s ploy for getting out of a party invitation. I’ll admit, things were looking up when Jeff (Jeff Garlin) and Susie (Susie Essman) showed up at Funkhouser’s (Marty Einstein). But by that time, my REM cycle wasn’t taking no for an answer.
About that smoke alarm bit. Didn’t I see a funnier variation on that on Friends a few years back? (Yup, I did.)
And showing up to a party on the wrong night to make the host think you didn’t really blow it off? I actually know a guy who did that. It was the annual office Christmas party. We wondered where he was that night. Turns out he showed up a day later and a Secret Santa gift shorter. I don’t think he was pulling a fast one, though.
The bit was redeemed a bit when Funkhouser spoiled the ruse, first by inviting Larry and Cheryl (Cheryl Hines) in anyway for games and leftovers, and then by doing the same to Jeff and Susie, who’d naturally stolen the idea.
So much for blaming your kid being the best excuse, though I loved the line about that being the best reason to have kids.
Alas, that’s all I’ve got. Like I said, things were looking up when I was conking out, so I’ll hit the DVR later and finish the task at hand tonight.
Hopefully, Larry and I can both make it up to you.

I with you ..it was a sleeper …. there were a couple of high points but over all a real snore .
