The good news: Caprica ain’t dead yet.
SyFy Portal is reporting that, fearing the loss of Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald Moore at the end of BSG’s run (they’re filming the fourth and final season right now), SciFi Channel execs may be ready to greenlight at least a pilot of Caprica.
Here’s how it’ll go, according to James Hibberd at TV Week:
… executives say “Caprica” has the potential to retain and expand the passionate “Battlestar” audience. The tone is lighter and more of a character-driven drama than an action series. The network is considering ordering a two-hour pilot that could serve as a stand-alone event — just like the miniseries that launched Moore’s “Battlestar” remake. The movie would be accompanied by a consecutive DVD release.Especially if the similarly conceived stand-alone “Razor” performs strongly, the thinking seems to be that a two-hour “Caprica” pilot could justify its expense. Worst-case scenario: The pilot is aired and sold as a DVD, recouping some costs. If the pilot is strong, then the network has a new series.

To tell you the truth; this sounds boring. Part of what makes BSG work as a show is the mix of action and drama. Lose too much of one or the other and it DOES NOT work. I really hope they just do a prequel/First Cylon War. Keep the mix of action and drama. BSG episodes that where not quite favorites tended to lose the mix and weigh too heavily on "blah blah blah". You need both elements. It drives the show keeps it moving and makes it watchable. I'm looking forward to the Young Adama stuff personally. I think it's brilliant that they decided to do that.
