If you were a fan of “Sports Night” and “The West Wing,” you already know New Rochelle native Joshua Malina.
(He played producer Jeremy Goodwin and political aide Will Bailey on those shows, respectively, both created by his good friend, Aaron Sorkin.)
Josh was largely absent from the small screen since “West Wing” ended in May 2006, but he’s back on TV now in the new ABC dramedy, “Big Shots.” It premieres Thursday at 10 p.m.
It’s about four friends who are all CEOs of major corporations, yet are totally messing up their personal lives.
Go here to read my story about Josh’s new job in today’s Journal News. And keep reading this post to listen to audio excerpts from my interview with him …
Josh told me a little about his show, which also stars Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan and Christopher Titus. It’s being billed as kind of a male “Sex & the City.”
There’s a key scene in Thursday’s premiere, where the four guys are talking about their love lives while sipping cocktails in a steam room.
I asked Josh whether this sort of male bonding was a contrived TV notion, or whether he thinks men really do confide in their friends this way.
Here’s what he had to say:
And here’s another tidbit about Josh: He’s an awesome poker player.
Josh actually was an executive producer and co-creator of Bravo’s “Celebrity Poker Showdown.” And for 17 years, he’s played in a weekly card game hosted by his good friend, Hank Azaria (best known for being the voice of many, many characters on “The Simpsons.”)
Well, apparently, those many, many years on the super-successful animated show has earned Azaria mucho dinero.
Because Josh told me that during times of, shall we say, less gainful employment, he’s had to gracefully bow out of the game because the stakes were too high.
Here’s Josh talking about how much he could stand to lose in one night at Azaria’s house:
And as Josh noted at the end of that excerpt, that’s Azaria’s game for the SMALL-TIMERS.
He’s got a whole other deal going on with some high-rollers.
Eek!
Celebrities. They’re just like you and me, right?
