Ratings, Kid Nation and Jericho

September
29

We all know that Jericho is supposed to be the first mid-season replacement on CBS, and BuddyTV.com makes a good argument as to why the time is now.

Kid Nation’s ratings already have begun to slide. The show dropped 1.7 million viewers from Week 1 to Week 2. Not a good sign. Its ratings are lower than Jericho’s were.

Let’s face it. There’s more than enough “reality” television out there. OK, I’m willing to let Kid Nation run a couple more weeks, give it time to get traction. But if Kid Nation can’t survive with all the buzz there was out there for it, let’s bring back Jericho before all its buzz starts to dissipate and fade away.

I hate to advocate for the cancellation of any show, given what happened to Jericho, but this isn’t quite the same thing. I somehow doubt legions of Kid Nation fans will be lobbying CBS for the return of their beloved “reality” series if it were killed. Except, maybe, the families of the children involved.

CBS killed Jericho’s momentum by poor scheduling last season, and has admitted as such. Kid Nation is collapsing under its own weight.

    Hi Amy,
I think it would be so odd if Jericho ended up in it’s old timeslot because KN wa the first to fail.

Thanks Amy. I agree it’s time to bring Jericho back but CBS needs to do some heavy advertising first.

Perfectly stated Amy. They also need to get more shows in production. Personally, I think that the fans have proven their case ten times over. Leaving this show in statis causes more long term damage than it is worth.

I Love Jericho and have been going through “Jericho Withdrawl” I agree that it needs to come back on soon, but CBS is saying that they need better ratings to keep it on and they are doing nothing to get them. I have seen no ads for Jericho. Even during the summer when they replayed season one they did not advertise. The fans can only do so much. We brought it back, now we need help keeping it alive.

There’s a world of difference between JERICHO and KID NATION, and I don’t suspect there would be very many people who would protest KN’s cancellation. What would they send to CBS?—chicken feathers? Perish the thought! Admittedly, JERICHO costs more to produce, but the quality is worth it. I, for one, have taken note of the advertisers, and find myself buying their products because those companies support quality programming on television. I’m not in that treasured 18-49 demographic, but I have money to spend like anyone else, and I’d rather support companies that have good taste and some appreciation for intelligence.

I am in no way trying to slam CBS but Kid Nation is just not entertainment nor is it a television program that is in the least bit interesting or thought provoking. The only thing nice I can say about this show is that it’s on the network that brought Jericho to us in the first place. I haven’t watched it and I said I wouldn’t watch it when CBS first announced it was running this show during the release of it’s fall schedule. I can at least say that when I say something, I mean it. From what I have read on the blogs and on the critics pages, it looks like I was right on track. If the network execs leave this show on tv for the whole season, I really do have to wonder who is in charge and how that person got to keep his job. It seems to be to be a mute point now but Jericho is so much more than just a television show to us but to the network, I guess meaningless dumbing down of viewers is more important.

Thank you for your article about Jericho.

I agree that Kid Nation should be given a couple of more weeks to try to accumulate a fan base. (I really don’t think this will happen.)

No matter when or where Jericho does return to CBS we need advertisements-we need to know the date it is coming back in plenty of time to promote Jericho ourselves by making posters with the new air date, youtube videos, and sending emails!

    Jericho-season three and beyond!

Thanks for the update Amy. I know a lot of folks don’t want to see Jericho back in that time slot, especially if it comes back in January and is up against AI again. If it were to comeback in this time slot within the next couple of weeks, however, I think it would do really well (and would finish up before AI premiered, since there are only 7 episodes). I just want Jericho back and I want it to do WELL, so I too hope CBS advertises heavily when it does.

I was totally wowed last year by Jericho and because of that have spent alot of time test driving this years batch of shows – looking for that wow factor. All I have found so far is the same ole stuff with new packaging that insults my intelligience. CBS please don’t miss the boat with the goldmine you have in your hands with a show like Jericho.
