Sprague Grayden dishes on Jericho

October
3

Because of its abbreviated run, Season 2 of Jericho won’t be delving into most characters backtsories, including that of Heather.

For those of you who are new to the show or just don’t remember (yeah, right)jerichocrop.jpg, Heather, played by Sprague Grayden, disappeared to New Bern about midseason, was believed to be dead and turned up in the Why We Fight season finale, very much alive and rescued by the military.

UnderGroundOnline interviewed Grayden in anticipation of the seven-episode run being aired sometime soon (knock wood).

By the way, “sometime soon” doesn’t appear likely to be in Kid Nation’s timeslot, as KN has already started looking for Season 2 locations, TVSquad informs, but outside the U.S. because of all those pesky labor law issues (New Mexico has closed the loopholes that allowed for filming the first season there).

Anyway, the good Jericho news is that we still are getting a lot more of Heather in Season 2, abbreviated or not.

Heather is so much more involved in the overall storyline than she ever was before. In that way, I think the fans will be thrilled, but there’s only so much you can do with seven [episodes].

Yes, I can think of at least a couple fans who’ll be quite pleased.

And while it’s not clear that Heather and Jake will ever truly get together, Sprague had some very cool news about her character:

I think that the tension is still going to be there, but the first season was about Heather as a girl. Even though she was 24-25, she hadn’t really been through traumatic experiences like Emily had. She hadn’t really learned how to stand on two feet. And the second season is about Heather standing on her own two feet and becoming a woman. She’s survived everything that happened to her at New Bern and because of that she still believes in people, especially Jake. But the walls are a little more structured, so you have to knock now to get in.

Sprague would love to get a guest spot on Battlestar Galactica, she reveals (that’d be great: paging Ron Moore and David Eick!!), and she even had a couple of tips for folks on how to survive after a nuclear attack:

Make sure you know how to make bio-diesel ahead of time. Make sure you have a lot of cars before 1960, because after an EMP they still work. Maybe it’s the ‘70s – I don’t know exactly – but it’s before the electronic ignition.

And, finally, she has nothing but fabulous things to say about the fans, as usual:

We’re completely indebted to them. I’ve said in other interviews I’ve done that every time, as an actor, you get a job you feel indebted somewhere, because there’s the 5% of us who work. It’s always something you want to do well at or make whoever gave you the job proud, but now we’re part of something so much bigger. We’re part of something that people have chosen to believe in. There’s such a responsibility that comes with that. It doesn’t even compare to the individual responsibility of wanting to make this producer happy because they were nice to me, it’s so beyond that. For me, I’ve never ever seen a reaction to a character I’ve played like the reaction to Heather. It feels amazing, but I’m so indebted and have such respect, and humbled and… it’s rad. It’s really an awesome trip to be on.

Thanks Amy. You know I like Sprague but Jake belongs with Emily.

I know you’re right. At the season’s start, I hated Emily and so wanted Jake to be with Heather. But as time went on and everything changed, I still loved Heather but realized Emily and Jake really are supposed to be together, corny as that sounds.

Get the DVDs and get caught up. It’s a show that gets better and better as it goes on right up to the incredible season finale. That’s why the fans went “nuts.”
