Fair to middling

That’s how I felt about Bionic Woman last night.

nup_108991_0169.jpgI still think it’s better than a lot of other things on TV these days; I still worship at the chuch of David Eick (and Ron Moore!).

But last night’s episode just didn’t have that Barton Fink feeling, know what I mean?

There were a few one-liners that were quite amusing — I laughed out loud when the woman she just saved from jumping off a building asked how she managed to do it, Jaime responds, “Pilates.” And how coud you not like it when she called Jonas a douche?

And tell me you didn’t chuckle when the tech guy basically smacks Jaime upside the head and knocks the bionics in her ear back into place so she doesn’t hear the ringing anymore. And when she broke Hottie McHottie’s rib in the bathroom. (By the way, ewww – who gets it on in a bar’s bathroom??)

But I’m just not sure where everything’s going. David Eick (and Ron Moore) gets far more leeway and time to develop a series from me. (By the by, didja catch when Jaime and Ruth went into that house and the TV was on and Battlestar Galactica was playing? Nice, Eick.)

I felt as if this episode was, perhaps, the second part of an intro. Jaime’s beginning to really see what her abilities are and to recognize that saving the world might be more self-satisfying than bartending. So long as she can be home to have dinner with her sister each night and make it to the talent show on Friday.

I found it interesting when Jaime was training; every move Jae made in their mock fight mirrored a move Sarah made the week before. But what does that mean? Jae said something about Sarah basically resetting Jaime (that’s not the word he used, but I’m suffering amnesia at the moment even though I know exactly what I mean. hate that.) and perhaps herself at the same time.

nup_109799_0324.jpgThe Jae/Sarah storyline is interesting. Someone hacked into Sarah? Is she perhaps not completely evil, but was just used and is now trying to clear her name?

I think she cares much for Jaime, sort of like a sister does; they’re the only two people in the world who can understand what the other’s going through.

And I don’t really feel like we’ve seen the last of Will. The bad guy who had Sarah kill Will is the same guy who broke Will’s dad out of prison. I find it hard to believe his dad would be behind his assassination. That and he’s still listed as a cast member on the show’s website. Could be a red herring, but I doubt it.

Who were the bad guys last night though? Were they connected with Will and his dad? Otherwise, how would they have gotten their hands on the biological agent they made up?

And why did Will have a dossier on Jaime? Did he know they were going to be in that accident they were in (caused by Sarah) and that’s why he was barely injures? How Sarah knew they’d be in that spot at that time was a puzzle to me. Jonas and the rest of the Berkut Group it appeared, didn’t know that Will was going to turn Jaime into a bionic woman. But Will obviously had planned on that for some time.

The more I think about this, the more I think that Will and his dad are behind everything that’s going on and the plan to have Jaime turned bionic has been the plan for some time. Maybe they even forced Jaime’s dad to dump Becca on her doorstep so she wouldn’t leave San Fran for the ivy-covered walls at Harvard?

I feel like this post is all over the place, but I felt like the episode was, too. They wrapped up that terrorist plot awfully fast at the end. (Mr. Fake Army Uniform gave up the ghost pretty fast. Chicken. Just get threatened with a pair of pliers and you spill the beans? Why doesn’t Jack Bauer ever get any bad guys this lame?)

I end this posting vaguely dissatisfied, just as I was with the episode. I still have high hopes for the series and maybe I’m just being too picky, but I just kinda sat there after it was over last night, not really sure how I felt about it.

The show is either going to bust out as one of the best things on television or is going to slowly peter out. Given Eick’s involvement, I’m betting on the former.

  1. BW Be Good Please

I don’t think Will is dead. It appears to me that he was either stalking Jaime on his own or he’s a “double agent”. I’m puzzled by Jonas’s reaction when Jaime mentioned Will’s dossier on her. He had no reaction. He didn’t say “WTF?”. He couldn’t have known because in the pilot, he had to be briefed about Jaime by Ruth at the round table meeting with everyone else.

The enemy in Paradise Lost was ridiculous. They rolled over. We have no idea who they were. No one asked who they were. No one was the least bit curious how the girl survived. The girl herself didn’t sound the least bit concerned about her grandparents being taken out in a mass murder plot. Jaime showed no signs of grief, her friends were completely insensitive. Jonas was wishy washy about sending a team in to Idaho. There wasn’t an ounce of tension in the whole episode. Alias would have had us scared out of our wits for Sydney’s safety, but I had no fear at any time for Jaime’s safety.

Why did Sarah Corvis have a tattoo on her left shoulder blade in the pilot but not in the second show? Is there more than one Sarah, like there’s more than one Sharon in BSG?

I want this show to be so good, but it’s like they’re not even trying so far. Try people, try.
