It ain’t easy being green, but NBC gives it a go

Network broadcasters can’t do much to make your widescreen more energy efficient or your viewing habits carbon-neutral.

But they can spread the eco-message that “Green is Universal,” which is what NBC has in mind next month.

Picture Earl driving a Prius, Howie Mandel making deals for locally grown produce or Jim Halpert pushing paper produced with a high quantity of post-consumer content. (Actually, that last one happened once.) You won’t be able to flip on the Peacock from Nov. 4-10 without being bathed in subliminal messages of the Al Gore variety.

“By creatively weaving stories concerning environmental awareness into our series, we see this as an opportunity to engage the audience and provide a positive social message,” said entertainment chief Ben Silverman in a statement. “Our ultimate goal is to entertain people while creating a conversation about a universal issue.”

So look for Stanley Tucci on ER, Kermit the Frog on Deal or No Deal and Gore on 30 Rock. Even the late-night talkies are getting in on the green game. An NBC Universal press release says Late Night with Conan O’Brien “will feature guests on the November 7 show whose names incorporate the word green.” That should save a few Arctic ice shelves, no?

A few more examples, including that of 30 Rock, which of course is NBC’s own fictionalized version of itself…

8 p.m., Nov. 5: Chuck—“Back to School”—Chuck (Zachary Levi) has to return to Stanford University, the institute that expelled him, on a weekend where the university is hosting its annual Green Festival and homecoming football game. Chuck’s focus will need to be on helping his former professor, whom he discovers is also a government operative and is being hunted out for a sensitive top-secret file. Chuck must use his past experiences to find his professor’s hidden secrets, while at the same time discovering shocking secrets about his own life. More importantly, Chuck discovers the truth about his former friend, Bryce Larkin, the one who got him kicked out of Stanford. Meanwhile, Morgan (Joshua Gomez) has problems with the new assistant manager at Buy More.

9 p.m., Nov. 5: Heroes—When one of his forgotten abilities suddenly manifests, Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Caitlin (Katie Carr) get thrown into a crisis situation, and learn first-hand just how deadly the mysterious
virus striking people with abilities can be. Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Matt (Greg Grunberg), Nathan (Adrian Pasdar), Niki (Ali Larter) and Bob (guest star Stephen Tobolowsky) band together to fend off the “nightmare man’s” attack. As West (Nick D’Agosto) helps with some energy-saving fixes around the house, Claire (Hayden Panettiere) hopes he doesn’t stumble on a photo and learn that the man who kidnapped him as a child is her father (Jack Coleman). Meanwhile, in feudal Japan, Hiro (Masi Oka) and Kensei’s (David Anders) legendary journey takes a dramatic, final turn.

9 p.m. Nov. 7: Bionic Woman—The Berkut Group has to team up with the CIA to catch a dangerous man who is selling a list naming the Berkut Group and CIA operatives. When Jaime (Michelle Ryan) and Tom (guest star Jordan Bridges) are partnered on the mission, it takes them to an international environmental conference in Paris, where they find themselves in the City of Love, competing and flirting with each other, while still trying to maintain a professional relationship. Meanwhile, Becca (Lucy Kate Hale) lands herself in jail when she tries to impress a boy and Jonas (Miguel Ferrer) has to bail her out.

8:30 p.m., Nov. 8: 30 Rock—As part of a GE-wide green initiative, Jack (Alec Baldwin) has come up with the idea of creating a green mascot for NBC—a “Phillie Phanatic” -looking character named Greenzo. When Greenzo’s eco-friendly preachiness gets obnoxiously out of hand in “The Girlie Show” offices, it’s Liz (Tina Fey) who gets fed up the most with the ridiculous character. Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) is planning his annual house party, a boring little soiree where Liz has been the only one who ever shown up in the past. Tracy (Tracy Morgan) wants the party to be a success for Kenneth, so he spreads a few little rumors to get the event hopping. What starts out as simple office gossip, gets out of control. Also featuring special guest stars Oscar and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore, Meredith Vieira and David Schwimmer.

9 p.m., Nov. 8: The Office—“Into the Woods”—After Ryan (B.J. Novak) excludes Michael (Golden Globe winner Steve Carell) from a corporate wilderness retreat, Michael heads into the woods for his own survival adventure with nothing but the suit on his back. Back at work, Jim (John Krasinski) tries to revolutionize the office birthday party.

As long as those “Bee Movie Juniors”/”N-BEE-C” segments are gone, I’ll be a happy man.
