Drunk driving — Not Kiefer

October
29

Daniel Dae Kim issued an apology this weekend for his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving:

108703_1721_ful.jpg

I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed by my actions of Thursday morning. It saddens me to know that I jeopardized the welfare of the kind people of Hawaii, a community that I love and call my home. It is my intention to cooperate fully with the police and I am grateful to them for their sensitivity throughout this matter. To my friends, family, colleagues and fans, thank you for your kind words of support. To those I have disappointed I can only ask that you accept my heartfelt apologies. I am truly, truly sorry.

Wow. Well that’s a serious mea culpa, which I snagged from E!Online’s Watch with Kristin.

It’s three days later and you’re just getting around to 30 Rock?

October
28

So it might have been the funniest episode since last season’s The Fighting Irish or the Rural Juror, but I couldn’t give it its blogger’s due because of a crazy, hectic weekend.

I don’t mean “hanging around Little Checnhya drinking wine and engaging in adverlingus all day” crazy. But crazy nonetheless. Better late than never, though, right? And rather than saddle you with a tedious recap of an episode you should have rewatched three times by now, I give you the blogger’s saving grace: a list.

rosemarys-baby-1.jpgWhat follows is merely the Top 16 lines and exchanges from “Rosemary’s Baby.” I arrived at 16 after I realized that when you go back and try to pull out the best parts out of a 30 Rock episode, you find yourself transcribing every word. And I ranked them first to last rather than best to least best because I’m lazy—and because I’m pretty sure “least best” isn’t grammatically correct.

(Oh, and while I can’t possibly describe it, and because it’s possibly the funniest 100 or so seconds in this show’s brief history—  and because I can’t find an embed code to just post it here—I share with you this link to Alec Baldwin zen. He may well have won an Emmy right here.) Read more of this entry »

Sure would have been fun to make The Office Convention in Scranton this weekend

October
28

I’m really bummed about missing The Office Convention in Scranton, Pa., this weekend.

convention1.jpg

It was close enough to home to justify a day trip yesterday, but the rain was falling too hard to justify dragging the Mrs. and the wee one out on an interstate pursuit of some Dunder-Mifflin fun. Of course, the storm clouds cleared by 3 in the afternoon—too late to hit the road—and today it’s sunny and brisk, a perfect day. And I’m working.

So I’m left to do what the other 9 million or so Office fans who tune in each week but couldn’t make it to Scranton are doing. I’m living vicariously through the photos, audio, video and commentary popping up on the interwebs from those who made it.

Getting Jericho noticed

October
26

about-diggguy.gifJericho fans have united (so what else is new?) for the first official Jericho Digg Day, which will take place Sunday.

More details are here.

What does Digging do? The short answer is that it basically is a way for folks to help others find articles of interest. As more people “Digg” an article, it rises to the top of the pack at Digg.com (here’s the site’s “about us.”)

From Mad Men to sci-fi horror

October
26

AMC is getting into the sci-fi game, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The network’s developing the “sci-fi horror thriller” 99 Stories.

The stories in question are the number of flights in a “multipurpose building” in some unnamed city. A group of strangers is invited to tour the building, which is new. They “find themselves trapped in it with no way out but up.”

David Seltzer, who wrote the original and remade versions of The Omen, as well as the screenplays for Shining Through, My Giant and Dragonfly, is creating it with James Middletown (exprod of The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and Steven Banks (he’s written 14 episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants since 2005).

Seltzer’s writing it. I’m guessing the 99 stories sets them up for, what, five or six years worth of episodes? (Cable shows tend to have shorter seasons than their network brethren/sisteren).764701_inside_the_elevator.jpg

In their fight for survival, the strangers are at the mercy of a technological brain that electronically controls every element of the building.

For example, the elevators, Seltzer explained, choose which people deserve to move up a flight in the building.

But the show’s not only about the folks trapped off in the building.

A ‘good’ man

October
26

At 9 p.m. Monday on PBS (WNET/Channel 13 locally), “American Masters” will present “Good Ol’ Charles Schulz,” about the life and work of the “Peanuts” paterfamilias.

tjndc5-5b1yu6uqv3kujtt4k3i_original.jpgI haven’t seen the program yet, but it couldn’t be more timely, not only because of the recent publication of the controversial Schulz biography by David Michaelis but because of what that controversy says about the way we perceive art and human nature.

It will be very interesting to see what tact the documentary takes. Apparently, the book, written in cooperation with the Schulz family, portrays the creator of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, et al. as something of the proverbial tortured artiste. (I just loved the cartoon that ran in The New York Times’ Oct. 14 “Week in Review” section, depicting Charlie Brown as Vincent van Gogh in the self-portrait he created after he cut off part of his ear. He, too, never seemed to win a ballgame.)

Once the Schulz book hit the fan, so did the criticism, with son Monte calling the bio “preposterous.” First of all, you will always get as many impressions of a subject as their are people looking at it. We are multifaceted creatures, shimmering prisms as we rotate in this world. It’s possible Monte Schulz and David Michaelis each caught different facets of Schulz as he spun on his axis.

We’ve gotta wait until when??

October
26

This is the worst news of the week (to me, at least): Battlestar Galactica’s fourth and final season won’t air until April.

bsg.jpgYou read that right: April.

So say we all says the Los Angeles Times today in an interview with exprod Ronald D. Moore. Still no news as to whether the season’ll be split in two.

1batdtc04.jpgMoore will make his directing debut in a late-season episode of Battlestar.

Battlestar Galactica’ news: The show will premiere in early April, Ron Moore will direct an episode

It’s the perfect opportunity to try and do it here with my family — the cast and crew of the show — who have been working together for years now. For all I know, I’ll hate directing, but right now I’m hungry for it.

He says he’s “directing an episode set deep in the Cylon world, as well as aboard the Galactica.”

Chloe news

October
26

We now know about how much time has passed between the end of Season 6 and the start of Season 7. At least a year and a half.

24_618-sc1805_116_f.jpgHow? Well, Mary Lynn Rajskub, our beloved (in a broad sense of that word) Chloe, told TVGuide.com the following:

I show up, time has passed and I have a 1-year-old and a wedding ring, [and I’m] calling Morris (Carlo Rota) while I’m busy. So far he’s taking care of the baby, but he’ll be around.

So, if the baby’s 1 year old and Chloe was at most three months pregnant (more likely only one or two months, if she was only just finding out she was preggers as Season 6 drew to a close) last we saw her, that means a minimum of 18 months has gone by.

ABC thinks ‘Dirty Sexy’ is money

October
26

Word on the street is ABC wants “Dirty Sexy Money” to stick around for awhile longer: The network has ordered three more scripts of the super-sudsy soap opera.

110658_7719_pre.jpg

Sweet! That hopefully means we’ll get to see lots more over-the-top action like the twins’ dueling $1 million birthday parties from this week’s episode.

Next Wednesday’s installment alone looks action-packed. Here’s what to look for:

• A high-stakes poker game—with a $20 MILLION buy-in – between Simon Elder and Tripp.

• Karen’s wedding plans to Freddy hit some snags when she finds out she’s not divorced from her third husband (played by cutie Edie Cibrian).

• Juliet takes Brian Jr. under her wing.

• Patrick is blackmailed over his relationship with Carmelita (you knew it was only a matter of time!)

• Jeremy starts working as one of Tripp’s parking attendants and meets a mysterious lady (played by Sofia Vergara).

Get down and “Dirty,” people!

“Smallville”: Lana=Robot

October
26

I wonder if the show’s producers were alluding to Jennifer Lopez when casting the movie star character Rachel Davenport. Larger than life, flashy, vain, secretly thrilled by paparazzi, etc. How nice of her to give Clark a present (of a red cape, no less. Why she gave him that specific item is beyond me, ckll-2.jpgalthough I do “get” the future superhero allegory) for saving her life. Though the photo in this entry shows Clark and Lana in front of a barrel, that scene wasn’t in the episode. (The barrel is there to hide whatever the diminutive Kristen Kruek is standing on to make her look closer to Tom Welling’s 6-foot-4 height.)

Clark and Lana’s shocking platonic relationship continues. No smooches, hugs or even pecks on the cheek—even after psycho production assistant and fanboy Ben threw her off a building and CK saved her from being sidewalk splatter! Lana has turned into a robot whose passions for Clark are being surpressed by her mission to get back at Lex and Lionel. That’s no fun for us, who’ve waited patiently for them to FINALLY get his secret out in the open and start a REAL relationship. And BTW, Clark’s ultimate fear—that Lana’s knowing his secret would result in her being used as a pawn against him—came true with the building toss. Oops! Especially since Ben is still alive to rat him out.

The Office — ‘Local Ad’: Limitless paper in a paperless world

October
26

Fancy New Beesly picking her tired head up off her keyboard and looking around bewildered was just about the cutest thing since puppies. The second cutest was her talking head right after that, with her hair still askew as she explained why she never made it home the night before.

local-ad-2.jpg

Such an odd couple of a highlights for an episode of The Office that was packed with moments but still felt like it was over before it got going. At least that was my take on first viewing. I rewatched it almost immediately (the only benefit of the abbreviated format) to see if my impression changed. What I concluded was that three things conspired to mess with my enjoyment of “Local Ad”:

“Grey’s” Revved Up (Finally!)

October
26

There was more action in last night’s episode than the last three combined, and it’s about time that the show got back up to speed.

There were myriad engaging plotlines last night, starting off with Meredith putting her mother’s ashes in a baggie. Sure, it was a bit weird for someone to do that, but with a mother like Mer’s, I don’t blame her. One thing, though: I have it on good authority—and via personal experience—that most people’s “creamains” aren’t all just ashes. There’s also stuff—such as bits of bones and fake teeth—that don’t end up incinerated. In other words, some of what had been in Mom’s urn would have gotten caught in the sink’s grates. Ick!

Kudos to Rebecca/Ava for having the courage to return to Seattle to see if Korev was still interested in her even though he didn’t persue her after she left with her hubby all those months ago. He was, however, left in the lurch after returning to their “sex room” following their romp. I read, though, that Rebecca/Ava’s real-life counterpart is signed on for four or so eps, so he—and we—will be seeing more of her.

Will you be there when The Office Convention hits Scranton this weekend?

October
25

So are you going this weekend? Are ya? Are ya?

The Office Convention takes over Scranton, Pa., tomorrow night for 48 hours of gelatin-engulfed staplers, apology videos and unchecked romantic workplace angst. And there will be bobble heads. Oh yes, countless bobble heads.

offcon.jpg

In the planning for the better part of this year, the city in which the NBC comedy is set will fully capitalize on the renewed renown Michael Scott & Co. have given it with a full slate of cast appearances, a downtown street festival, live music, parties, exhibits and replays of actual episodes on movie theater screens downtown.

Makes you wonder why Peekskill never got this idea when The Facts of Life was still on the air.

X-Files meets Moonlighting meets … Raiders of the Lost Ark?

October
25

What do you get when you combine The X-Files, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Moonlighting?

sci_fi_usa_logo.jpgWarehouse 13, of course. What else would you be thinking?

NBC Universal, which owns the Sci Fi Channel, announced today that it OKd a two-hour pilot of the dramedy, “with an eye toward a summer 2008 premiere.”

Here’s how the show is described:

After saving the life of the President, two FBI agents find themselves abruptly “promoted” and relocated to windswept South Dakota. Their new top-secret location is Warehouse 13 – a massive, secret storage facility that houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government over the centuries. In addition to searching the country for several missing objects discovered stolen from the Warehouse, their job is to monitor for new reports of supernatural and paranormal activity that could indicate the presence of another object they must investigate and safely bring back to the vaults of Warehouse 13.

More Reaper!

October
25

The CW has ordered three more scripts for Reaper, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (In case you saw this earlier and then couldn’t find it, but then found it again — you’re not losing your mind. Wordpress just hates me today and published, then ate my original post. How? If I knew that, I’d be far smarter than I am.)

This is excellent news for the ratings-challenged-but-best-new-show-of-the-season. (Have I mentioned how much I like this one?)

The latest to get a full season: Frasier Crane and Debra Barone

October
25

Um, I mean Chuck Darling and Kelly Carr. Sorry.

bty_102-a_8327abrf.jpg

But seriously, Fox announced today that it ordered an additional 11 episodes of Back to You, the Kelsey Grammar/Patricia Heaton sitcom. That gives it a total season order of 24 episodes.

The announcement came in a press release today from Fox Broadcasting Co.’s president of entertainment, Kevin Reilly.

The show airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays and has been doing pretty decent in the ratings so far.

Back from the brink

October
25

Bionic Woman came back from the brink of cancellation (from my DVR season pass, not NBC) last night.

nup_110995_0163.jpgThis is what we should have been getting all along — Jaime Sommers being all Bionic-y, solving crimes and getting the job done.

First off, I love the relationship she’s developed with Nerd Nathan. Of course, he’s totally hot for her, plus he feels a bit of ownership over her bionics, but they’ve come to have a sort of brother-sister bickering relationship that’s pretty fun.

His whole narration (to no one in particular) of her date with Tom was worth a chuckle or two and their conversation while she’s jumping onto roofs and from building to building — with her having to pause often because she couldn’t hold the phone to her ear while she was doing whatever she was doing at the moment — was quite amusing.

Nathan: “That’s this company for you. They’ll spend $50 million on your bionics, but won’t spring for a Bluetooth!”

Speaking of sibling relationships, there was blessedly little of Becca last night. She made an incredibly brief appearance at the beginning of the episode as Jaime’s friends are telling her how she needs to find a guy (um, didn’t her fiance just die? cut the girl some slack!) and that was it. Though I have to admit, I wondered who was looking after Becca while Jaime was living in the college dorm. Hmm?

‘Gossip Girl’ has a ball

October
25

So you know you loved that masquerade ball last night.

The costumes, the secrets, little J giving evil Chuck his come-uppance.

XOXO, no?

48820.jpeg

I really like the fact that the show isn’t making Jenny a shrinking violet: This is the second time in a row that J got the best of Blair. Last week she talked her way out of an arrest at Blair’s mom’s clothing store (and walked off with a fab couture jacket to boot); this installment had her sneaking into the party when B had specifically told her she couldn’t come.

But something tells me Jenny isn’t getting off so easy this time, now that B knows she was Cinderella in disguise.

B’s nasty little squint at the end leads me to suspect a plan: I’m guessing B sets J up for “stealing” that borrowed bracelet she was supposed to return.

(Man, these ladies play hardball. The mean-girl troublemakers in my high school might have gotten someone detention; on “GG,” victims may earn a criminal record.)

Plus, we got introduced to Vanesa last night: Dan’s best friend/ex nearly put a crimp in his plans to woo Serena. Vanessa’s a big deal in the “GG” novels, so fans of the books were waiting for this character’s debut.

48748.jpeg

As producer Stephanie Savage told Entertainment Weekly in this interview, the show’s gotten a lot of flack for changes they’ve made from the books, including their decision to give Vanessa hair. (Lots of it, in fact: Unlike actress Jessica Szohr and her curly mane, on-the-page Vanessa has a shaved head.)

That’s all for now, “GG” watchers.

To tide you over until next Wednesday, here’s a question to ponder: How long do you think it’ll be before J spills the beans about Nate’s continued love for Serena?

At long last

October
25

We finally get a first look at 24’s Season 7 and it looks really great. Of course, one could have said that about the Season 6 crapapalooza, which also had a great trailer (as Blogs4Bauer pointed out).

You can go to B4B to check it out, or go straight to YouTube. Or, you can go stand in the rain in Times Square at 1 p.m. today. Or go to www.24trailer.com after 1 p.m. today. Or just come back here:

It’s got your torture (both in word and in deed, plus Jack gets to say, “I’m going to enjoy this” in response to being told he can do whatever needs to be done to get the information). It’s got your mole (in the FBI; CTU doesn’t exist anymore). It’s got your Chloe (got snark?). It’s got Jack basically telling Congress that yeah, he tortured people, but the alternative would have been far worse for far more people.

soul.jpg

And it’s got Tony. Nearly shaved head. Soul patch! Bad Tony.

Really bad. He’s trying to crash an airliner (will Jack save them in time?). He’s leading the Bad People.

What?

‘Daisies’ builds a birdhouse

October
25

I didn’t think it was possible to be more delighted by “Pushing Daisies.”

But each week, the series gets more charming and—perhaps unbelievably—more wacky.

110889_1526_pre.jpg

Last night’s episode, “Pigeon,” gave me a particularly warm glow because it featured Olive and Aunt Vivian’s duet of “Birdhouse in Your Soul.”

For those not familiar, that song is by the duo They Might Be Giants, known for their goofy tunes like “Don’t Let Start” and a cover of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).” (Sing it with me now: “Even old New York was once New Amsterdam…”)

So how happy was I when Olive broke into that fun little ditty—and then somber Vivian chimed in!
