Dave Annable talks ‘Brothers & Sisters’

So I recently chatted with one of the resident hotties on ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters:” Suffern-born Dave Annable.
He plays wounded war vet Justin Walker, who endured a whole lot in the show’s freshman season: His dad died, he had post-traumatic stress from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and a nasty drug addiction to go along with it.
This season doesn’t seem much easier on Justin: In the show’s May cliffhanger, he went back overseas to Iraq and he’ll be battling his addiction again this season after being forced to take painkillers for a severe knee injury.
All this hasn’t been easy for Annable (pronounced Anna-bell), who was basically a newbie in show biz when he was cast as Justin last year.
Read my story on Dave in today’s Journal News to find out what he did to prep for the role.
He also talks about a new role he’s taken on: college student.
Seems that the 28-year-old left SUNY Plattsburgh with only a semester to go, and now he’s gone back—not in person, but through online courses—to get his degree.
Go Dave! It’s nice to see someone from young Hollywood trying to better himself this way, instead of just schmoozing (or worse) at nightclubs.
And speaking of nice, Dave totally is!
When I was doing some research on him for our interview, I noticed that his ABC bio makes a big point of noting his combination of talent and “affable charm.” A phrase like that is a bit unusual, and one that makes me immediately doubt its truthfulness.
But it turns out that Dave really is quite a charmer. Plus, he called me right on time (a major positive attribute, especially when you’re dealing with celebrities) and from his house (yup, my caller ID showed “D. Annable”) without being patched through by an assistant or publicist.
I love that in a star.
Plus, he didn’t even get pissy when I asked him whether he’s dating co-star Emily VanCamp, as has been rumored.
True, he didn’t exactly answer the question, but he did politely say, “Thank you for asking,” before trying to change the subject.
Anyway, “Brothers & Sisters” kicks off its November sweeps episodes tomorrow night at 10 p.m., with guest star Danny Glover.
If you haven’t checked the show out, tune in now: If nothing more than to get a glimpse of the natural charm Dave brings to Justin.
