The Hollywood Reporter reports that ABC has ordered five episodes of Dance Machine, casting now for a January start. The networks says they were planning on this before the writers strike became a reality.
Haha! Get it? Became a reality? And it’s a reality series? Oh, never mind.
So what, you may ask, is Dance Machine (even if you’re not asking, you’re wondering if you should ask)?
“A dance competition featuring real people competing for a cash prize.”
Or, alternately, RDF USA CEO Chris Coelen (how’s that for acronyms? RDF USA is the producer of the show) said:
Ordinary people, extraordinary circumstances and a whole lot of money on the line. The show embodies everything a large, network format should.
Honestly, what? Exactly what sort of “extraordinary circumstances”? I started to write several jokes here, but I realized I’d just end up offending someone, so I’m just going to keep quiet.
Or how about this, from the casting call notice:
you don’t have to be a trained dancer to take home the cash—all you need is lots of energy and the willingness to leave it all out on the dance floor. We are looking for all types of people—from the cool 21-year-old hip-hop dancer to the sassy salsa-dancing grandma!
RDF USA is also behind Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Wife Swap and Shaq’s Big Challenge.

Considering this is ABC, is the show tentatively titled “Dancing with the Shlubs”?
