Sniff. HBO announced this sad news over the summer, and indeed, it’s true:
Funnyman Ricky Gervais is pulling the plug on his hilarious HBO series, “Extras,” bowing with an 80-minute Christmas special set to air Dec. 16.
“Extras” only offered us 12 episodes over the last two years, but the laughs seemed to last longer.
The scripts were so funny, and Gervais’ reputation in the U.K. so great, the show was able to snag what seemed like every British A-lister: Kate Winslet, Patrick Stewart, Orlando Bloom, Daniel (“Harry Potter”) Radcliffe, David Bowie, Ian McKellan and so on.
The series finale is no exception: Guest stars include George Michael and Clive Owen. They’ll be part of whatever madness Gervais’ alter ego, Andy Millman, has to offer…
Gervais says Andy’s about to take drastic measures to earn respect after his terrible—but wildly popular—sitcom has made him a star.
The real-life “Extras” regulars have done well, too.
Gervais was a surprise winner at September’s Emmy Awards, snatching the trophy for Best Comedy Actor from Alec Baldwin of “30 Rock,” who was thought to be a lock.
And the fantastic Ashley Jensen —who plays Andy’s sweet, but dim, pal Maggie—is now on “Ugly Betty.”
Ah, Andy, we hardly knew ya. But we’ll tune in next month to get to know you just a little bit better before you say good-bye for good.
