‘Lost’ fills in some missing pieces

We’ve already told you where “Lost” fits in the TV landscape right now, given the ongoing writers strike, which head writer Damon Lindelof says (in an op-ed piece in Sunday’s New York Times) is “getting ugly.”
Good news: The show has 8 episodes in the can, and ABC has decided that an extra short season of “Lost” is better than no “Lost” at all. Looks like those 8 will air starting in early February, as planned.
Bad news: Damon says the show didn’t intend for Episode 8 to be a cliffhanger, and there are worries that a big gap in the season will kill viewership even more than last year’s three month hiatus. Unless there’s some shocking, speedy resolution to the strike, the rest of the season likely won’t air until 2009.
I agree with MSNBC contributor Jeff Hidek, who argues that ABC’s decision is a mistake.
Serialized shows like “Lost” don’t do well when it takes long breaks. Isn’t that why ABC agreed to postpone “Lost” until February, so 16 episodes could be aired consecutively, thus avoiding the reruns and mini-breaks that damaged ratings in previous years. ABC would have served fans (and itself ) better by waiting to air the season in full, like Fox has planned for “24.”
But I digress. The other news is that the first “Lost” webisode is now available on ABC.com. Originally conceived for viewing by Verizon Wireless customers, the shorts are called “Missing Pieces,” and are supposed to fill in the blanks on island mythology and characters’ back stories.
Titled “the Watch,” this “mobisode” is Jack-centric, a flashback to an exchange between him and his father, Christian, just before his wedding to Jack’s now-ex-wife, Sarah.
Call me unobservant, but after watching this, I’ve no clue on what new info this was supposed to impart.
The only comment that struck me as interesting was Christian’s pre-marital advice to Jack: “If you and Sarah ever have a kid, try to treat him a little better than I treated you.”
A hint that perhaps Sarah’s baby—she was pregnant in May’s flash-forward season finale—is Jack’s?
Argh!! Only 8 episodes in 2008, really? Being a “Lost” fan may truly drive me crazy…
