Carmela’s back as lefty to Jack’s righty on ‘30 Rock’ tonight

I never pondered Carmela Soprano’s politics, though I imagine she was the old school, family values type, tough on education but soft on crime.
Actually, I doubt she had a political bone in her body, which is why it’ll be interesting to see Edie Falco’s turn as a liberal congresswoman and Jack Donaghy’s secret romantic interest in “Somebody to Love”, tonight’s edition of 30 Rock.
It isn’t just politics that I have a tough time associating with the mafia boss’s Mrs. I can’t see the three-time Emmy-winning Falco in a comic setting, even as the Abbot to Alec Baldwin’s pathological Costello. An accomplished actress of stage and screen (big and small), I’ve no doubt the SUNY Purchase grad is up to the task.
All I’m saying is I’m intrigued. Here’s the episode summary.
Jack (Baldwin) attends a cocktail party honoring Colin Powell, and there he falls for C.C. (Falco), a Democratic congresswoman from Vermont. Although they are on the opposite sides of the fence, Jack and C.C. ignore their political differences and attempt to be a couple under the radar. Liz (Tina Fey) thinks her Middle Eastern neighbor might be a terrorist. After all, he won’t shake Liz’s hand; has maps all over his house, and helps Pete (Scott Adsit) rewire the toaster. But Liz is paranoid, and tips off his neighbor’s whereabouts to an official at the Homeland Security office.
Whatever Tina Fey’s politics might be, I love that her character is guilty of the same suspicions, shortcomings, preconceptions and insecurities that trip up the rest of us no matter our partisan stripes. Remember when Liz told Floyd she tells friends she supports Barack Obama but secretly she plans to vote for John McCain? If nothing else, she’s not predictable.
And I loved Fey’s comment following announcement of Falco’s appearance.
We’re thrilled to have such an amazing actress come join us. Also, a lot of guys on our crew want ‘The Sopranos’ ending explained to them.
30 Rock tidbits
…Seats sold out fast to performances of the Upright Citizens Brigade, the storied improv troupe whose current and former ranks include SNL stars Amy Poehler and Horatio Sanz. SNL’ers will take the stage Saturday, followed Monday by Fey and fellow Rockers Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski.
…Look for Time Out New York On Demand’s Lauren Scala tonight. TVGuide.com reports she shares a scene with Fey and Baldwin.
…Playing the race card is in vogue on several top comedies, including 3o Rock, The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm, a killer piece in today’s New York Times yesterday says. From Curb’s season-long arc with the Black family to The Office’s Season 2 encounter with diversity trainer Mr. Brown, to 30 Rock’s Liz’s awkward appraisal of Sherri Shepherd’s character’s diamond ring—“Bling bling, that is ghetto fabulous!”— primetime comics are pushing the envelope with a very touchy subject, the Times aruges.
