Doggie love on ‘Pushing Daisies’

November

Hmph. I’m as big a fan of “Pushing Daisies” as you’ll get, but is Ned starting to grate on anyone else’s nerves?

Last night’s episode, about the murder of a polygamous dog breeder, wasn’t the series best.

True, it gave Emerson a lot of classic lines (my favorite: “Would you prop him up? He looks like a wine-o on New Years.) and it was great to see the mystery-solving Scooby Doo gang let Olive in on the fun.

But the episode as a whole seemed as if it was just an excuse to voice Ned and Chuck’s realization of the limits to their relationship. (Chuck seemed to get this a bit more than Ned, hinting that they were probably going need surrogate boy/girlfriends sometime soon.)

This was necessary, of course: It would be silly if the sweet pair didn’t eventually run into some snags.

And while the show normally does a great job making sure viewers don’t overdose on the characters’ sticky sweetness, I think last night’s installment didn’t do enough of that.

Ned’s abandonment neuroses kind of got annoying; I was tempted to reach into the TV and smack his little head when he was sitting on the dog therapist’s couch.

Ned’s passive nature usually works, but last night, he was so passive he seemed almost comatose. He’s going to have to at least become passive-aggressive in the coming episodes if he’s going to keep Chuck around.

Speaking of coming episodes, did you check out the trailer for next week’s? It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for, the return of Pee-wee Herman!

OK, it’s really actor Paul Reubens, who’s jumping aboard the “Daisies” chain as olfactory expert Oscar Vibenius.

Here’s a sneak peek of Oscar: Don’t you think he looks a little like Tim Burton? (Trivia alert! Burton got his directing career going with 1985’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.”)

Was Oscar an homage to Tim? Reubens says no.

I talked with the Peekskill-born comedian this week, and he says he didn’t notice any similarities to Burton. He had a lot of input into how Oscar looked, and he says he just wanted the character to have “crazy hair.”

Check back here on Tuesday, when I’ll post some audio clips of my interview with Paul and link to my story about him in the Journal News.

Here’s a hint about what he had to say: You might be seeing more of Pee-wee Herman in the future…HAHA!

I’m so glad to find you are a fan of this wonderful new show. PUSHING DASIES and HOUSE are the only weekly stories I watch. I agree it was the weakest episode so far.

A few more show tunes from Kristen Chenoweth would be welcome. A full fledged duet between her and Ellen Green would be fantastic! Was it my imagination or were Chucks aunts AWOL this week? That may be the problem with this weeks episode. Pee-wee! Makes sense. Everywhere on the show looks like a room in his playhouse.
