Last Friday’s episode of “Moonlight” had some of the poignancy of the old Buffy-Angel romance.
First, how clever to have an episode that offered up a dark mirror to the Mick-Beth story. Whereas Mick (Alex O’Loughlin) has watched over Beth (Sophia Myles) like a guardian angel after saving her, the serial killer-turned-vamp in this installment really bedeviled Audrey, coming back from his execution to torment her after killing her family so many years before. The killer/vampire was a marvelously frightening creation (although I can’t say I was crazy about having the priest inexplicably be the vampire-maker or turning the killer into a cruciform figure during his death-by-lethal injection. Please!).
Good thing, though, that both Mick and Beth were there for Audrey. You have to think Beth is what Audrey might’ve been all along had she had someone like Mick to protect her in childhood. If we’re lucky in this life, we meet that person who either helps us at a crucial moment or perhaps even rescues us. Now, thanks to Hollywood’s new It Forbidden Couple, Audrey’s really free.
And Mick and Beth really are a forbidden couple, aren’t they? That sunrise ending with Beth holding out a glimmer of hope for and a tearful Mick resigned to a love that can never be  well, that was genuinely moving.
This could be the dawn of a memorable TV relationship.
