‘Lost’ and the return of Frogurt

November
20

So anyone catch the second “Missing Pieces” mobisode from “Lost?”

For those not in the loop, the creators of “Lost” decided to make 13 two- to three-minute never-before-seen scenes from the hit show—releasing them only to Verizon Wireless customers and on ABC.com.

These aren’t deleted scenes, it’s all-new content with many of the series’ cast members acting in them—which is ironic, given that the writers’ strike has cut the already-shortened season of “Lost” in half, and this is exactly the sort of extra Internet-based writing that the scribes are upset about. (“Lost” and ABC Studios did pay the mobisode writers separately, though: Go to this New York Times story to find out more about that deal.)

Anyway, the second mobisode is out now at ABC.com, and it’s titled “The Adventures of Hurley and Frogurt.”

Like the last mobisode featuring Jack and his dad discussing a watch, this one doesn’t have much to offer in the way of clues to the island mythology, as the creators have claimed.

It’s only interesting if you know the backstory: Lead writers and producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have said that  Frogurt (ahem, Neil) will be more prominent this season.

So oddly, this character is actually being introduced to fans on the Internet: Usually the show features a character or plotline, and viewers then can turn to the Web to find out more.

Don’t remember who Frogurt is? Well, here’s the lowdown…

Frogurt is an Oceanic survivor who was only seen on the show once before, in Season 2. He was one of the volunteers who tried to help Bernard build the S.O.S. sign on the beach. His nickname comes from Bernard’s comment that he used to sell frozen yogurt.

And now, according to the mobisode, Frogurt is, well, for lack of a better phrase, a total tool.

The scene sadly takes place just before Libby is killed by Michael. (If you recall, at the end of Season 2, she went into the hatch to grab some blankets for her picnic with Hurley when she walks in on ol’ Mikey after he’s shot Ana-Lucia. He blasts her twice through the blankets and she dies later with Hurley at her side.)

So in the Internet scene, Frogurt confronts Hurley about whether he’s planning to make a move on Libby. Because Frogurt wants Libby for himself.

Hurley tells him he’s got a date with Libby right now, and Frogurt walks away with the snotty retort, “Well played…”

We all know that date never happens. But we’ve yet to discover how Frogurt fits into the island mystery.

Well played, Cuse and Lindelof, well played.

I totally don’t remember this character. It seems they like using the multitude of non major survivors as a way of having a body count without having bump off a major character. I was reading that Lost starts back up in January. I guess we’ll see then whether or not Frogurt will be just another kill or become a major character.
