Sweet war on ‘Pushing Daisies’

“Pushing Daisies” continues its run of stellar guest stars tonight when former “SNL”-er Molly Shannon pops up as a nasty taffy shop owner, Dilly Balsam, who’s determined to drive Ned’s Pie Hole out of business.
I’m sure our loyal Scooby gang of detectives won’t let that happen. But in the meantime, Shannon is sure to put her kooky, quirky sense of humor to good use.
By her side as Dilly’s brother, Billy, is actor-writer Mike White (remember him as Jack Black’s sad-sack roommate in “School of Rock?”).
This fun comes right on the heels of last week’s episode, which included Paul “Pee-wee Herman” Reubens in a recurring role as super-smeller Oscar Vibenius.
He’s back next week to sniff out what’s different about Chuck. Yay! But unless Hollywood reaches an agreement with the writers, it’ll likely be the last “PD” for a long, long time. Boo!
I didn’t blog about last week’s laugh riot because of Thanksgiving- and blog-related chaos. But wasn’t it a hoot?
Not only did we have sewer-dwelling Pee-wee—sorry, Oscar—on board, but the episode marked the reunion of the Darling Mermaid Darlings! I knew it was only a matter of time before the aunts got back in the swim of things.
(P.S. Loved the swimming costumes, too: It looked like the aunts had Bedazzled a bunch of Chinese-food containers…fabulous!)
And it offered yet another musical number—this time from Aunt Vivian with “Morning Has Broken.”
Time magazine’s James Poniewozik had a great observation in his own TV blog last week. He says that “Pushing Daisies” has done what the thankfully short-lived “Viva Laughlin” couldn’t do: launch a successful TV musical.
And I’ll ask you all a similar question to one that James asked his readers: Who would you want to see sing next on the show?
Another guest star with Broadway chops, like Mandy Patinkin, as James suggests? Yet another diddy by Aunt Vivian or Olive?
Or a duet by our favorite touch-challenged couple, Ned and Chuck?
OOH, OOH, I know: An ode to knitting by Emerson Cod!!!
Now that would be some weird, wild stuff.
Anyway, we’ll see what happens tonight, and check back here tomorrow to post your comments. And don’t forget: Tonight’s episode is on an hour later than usual—at 9 p.m.—because of a few holiday specials.
“Shrek the Halls” is at 8, get your “Grinch” on at 8:30, then get ready to smell the “Daisies.” Enjoy!
