Cotillion chaos on ‘Gossip Girl’

December
6

Ahh, debutante balls—so elegant, so romantic, so … out-of-control?Yes, “GG” fans, last night was all of those things. Poufy gowns, dance floor kisses, jealous brawls: no big surprise there.

The biggest shock came at the end, when Chuck (sort of) revealed his true feelings for Blair. (As Gossip Girl herself said, who knew he had a heart to lose?)

And speaking of true love, how about that phone call Rufus made to Lily: “I never should have let you let me go.”

I’m guessing Rufus will be saying sayonara to the unfaithful Alison sometime soon.

The two generational love triangles (Blair/Nate/Chuck and Lily/Rufus/Alison) were the subplots, but I found them far more interesting than the Serena-Dan storyline that dominated.

Although it did serve to give us some more information about why Lily and Rufus broke up, and now I’m liking Lily far more than her daughter—who, apparently, is just as rebellious as Mommy once was.

Turns out that Lily rejected that blue-blood world, too (which we figured out from the groupie references). But unlike her daughter, Dan and Rufus, Lily can be bought.

CeCe, Lily’s nasty old bat of a mother, told Lily she’d take away her trust fund if she didn’t end her relationship with Rufus (Lily let Rufus think she ran off with another guy.) And bribing Rufus to make Dan stop seeing Serena? That plan didn’t work either.

Though I was sort of amused by her bitchy chat with Dan, warning him he’ll simply be a “cocktail party anecdote” Serena tells in about her wild youth in the future.

Anyway, Lily comes through in the end for Serena, stamping Dan with her seal of approval and dragging him back to the ball. And it seemed as if she was living vicariously through Serena, watching wistfully as she and Rufus—sorry, Dan—kissed.

Hey, it’s kind of icky if your mom starts dating your boyfriend’s dad, but hell, it’s all about being happy, right?

And speaking of happy, who exactly is Blair happiest with? She seemed more giggly and independent at the beginning of the episode while getting all those texts from Chuck, completely ignoring the supposed love-of-her-life, Nate.

But alas, by the end, she’d figured out Chuck’s nefarious plan to ruin the ball by setting up Nate’s fight with Carter.

Except Blair doesn’t get that Chuck wasn’t doing it to annoy her: He did it so she’d stop mooning over Nate.

Too bad Blair is turned on by bad boys: She thought Nate punching out Carter was hot. Gee, Chuck, you should have seen that one coming, right?

Ah, well, it’s off to the airport for Chuck. And as for Rufus and Lily, well, who knows where their relationship is heading?

We’ll have to wait two weeks to find out for more: “GG” takes a break next week.

But it returns Dec. 19 with a Christmas episode.

We’ll see Blair’s dad again, and meet his model boyfriend. Looks like Serena and Dan may finally consummate their relationship.

And, as I predicted, Rufus and Alison hit the skids again when Alison’s former lover calls—and it’s a … woman?

I could have sworn that Rufus got all upset when a guy answered Alison’s phone while they were separated, but perhaps Ali’s cheated more than once?

Until then, XOXO….

    Hi Ann Marie,

Doesn’t “Gossip Girl” have the greatest music? They really do an amazing job with pairing scenes and songs—plus introducing viewers to some great new bands.

Anyway, to answer your question…Dan and Serena kissed so much in that episode that there are a few songs that could be the one you’re thinking of.

The first two are by the band that was featured playing at the cotillion, the Pierces. The songs they played while all the kids were waltzing are “Secret” and “3 Wishes.”

The last one—which is the one I think you’re referring to—is the song that played as Lily watched from the balcony as Serena and Dan kissed in the lobby. That one’s a bit better known: It’s “Apologize” by Timbaland ft. One Republic.

This is one of my favorite episodes. It’s snappy, ugly and beautiful. I just want to point out that the whole show, and the characters are so much like the ones in The O.C. I am well aware that they have the same maker. Dan-Seth, Serena-Marissa, Blair-Summer, Chuck-Luke, Nate-Ryan(sort of). I am so torn between the two, because honestly Gossip Girl seems to be the best but I am so loyal to the cast and the show The O.C. Does anyone else get that feeling? Like they’re your friends and you seem to know them because the shows are such a part of you? Haha. I went on here looking for a song and I found it. Thanks a million >,
