The Office Tao of Scott, and catching up with Jenna Fischer

Try as they might, some people can’t help looking for the deeper moral, the life lesson, the very-special-episode-of-Blossom-like theme beneath the surface of good comedy.
And that’s just what MSNBC has done in its breakdown of Michael Scott, deconstructing his missteps and divining corporate cautions for managers everywhere.
If your motivational speeches are prompting people to jump off boats in the middle of January, you probably need to bone up on your public speaking. If you wore a woman’s suit to work today, and you’re not a woman, get thee to a Men’s Warehouse pronto. And any male manager who arranges a field trip to Victoria’s Secret for his female subordinate has probably been escorted to the exits by their human resources representative and a small security detail long ago.
Beyond the obvious, there is some meaty advice to be found here, though. Tearing up a textbook is a good metaphor for undervaluing education. Making your assistant (to the) do your laundry for a year is probably more about a vendetta then a constructive punishment. And cross-dressing really doesn’t accomplish the goal of dressing for the job you want instead of the one you’ve got.
It does requires a leap of the imagination to believe Steve Carell and Co. had any of that in mind, though.
In other Office news, Jenna Fischer was on the Today show the other day, and she also popped by Live with Regis and Kelly. Here’s the latter clip…
Thanks to OfficeTally and ddker for the links.
Speaking of the recently single Fischer, there’s a vicious rumor out there that her current “Jim” is Joe Dirt himself, David Spade. James Gunn and a million fanboys just threw up a little in their mouths.
To wipe that image from your minds, the Philly Daily News caught up with the Walk Hard co-star this week. She dishes on the last thing the Office crew was working on when the writers strike hit…
…the episode they were about to shoot centered around a dinner party thrown by Michael Scott (Steve Carrell) for the entire office staff.“It was, like, two years in the making and it planted a lot of seeds for the rest of the season in terms of story arc,” she said.
And what it’s like to be live life in the celebrity fishbowl.
“There’s nothing interesting about it,” she said. “I need to flash my Britney or something, or do something more than watch ‘Project Runway’ and eat spaghetti.”
Speaking of catching up, Rolling Stone did just that with Office primogenitor Ricky Gervais, whose Extras Christmas special finale aired Sunday, though it remains on my DVR, unwatched, because my life is just that busy. So if you’re like me, and you haven’t seen it yet, this preview interview is still quite timely.
Oh, and if I haven’t said it before, the Golden Globes are stupid. Unless I agree with their picks.

Jenna is so cool. Loved her story about the four Jims and four Pams.
