The Bionic Woman and me

Wow.
First off, I have to say I’m surprised there are still so many rabid BW fans out there.
Second, I understand they’re upset that everyone’s pooping on their show, but don’t accuse me of being an anti-Bionic-ite just because I’ve said the show needs to be taken out of our misery.
Hold on, hold on! Read the entire entry before you rush to hit the “comment” button and blast me.
Before the season even started, I was gushing. Here’s our video preview of the sci-fi and fantasy offerings for the season. I also commented on how great it was that Eick made use of not just Sackhoff, but other Battlestar stalwarts, as well, in the pilot.
Heck, once I found out that Battlestar was going to have only one more season, I figured Bionic Woman might be able to take its place in my pantheon of must-watch shows.
When the show premiered, I gave my thoughts on the pilot. Yes, I did focus on the little things that annoyed me, but I explained why. Basically, I thought that would be a nice change from me just saying super-fantastic things about it. These were relatively minor things (the fact that Jaime looked super-refreshed too early in the morning after working all night in a bar and being jarred awake by really loud music, for example), And, honestly, I had no idea that the bad would overwhelm the good for the rest of its run. Despite many friends opining that the pilot was a snoozefest, I disagreed and found much to look forward to.
In fact, I ended that review with this thought:
I know many don’t agree with me on this, but I hope Bionic survives. The show has a lot of promise and, like I said, I like dark, brooding shows.
I opined about the possible import of Sarah Corvus’ last name being the genus name of the crow family and one of the 48 constellations named by Ptolemy.
Then, after a few weeks of being disappointed, I praised its return from the brink, saying it was finally hitting a stride.
But then, well, yawn. It just got boring. And I opined as such.
And I’m just sorry, but if anyone thought the final pre-strike episode was good, their standards are just a wee bit lower than mine. I make no apologies for saying that. It was not a good hour of television, no matter how you slice it. Though I still love Nathan.
Did I expect too much from a remake of a cheesy 1970s show? Maybe. But David “Battlestar Galactica” Eick was on board, and he brought some of the great BSG actors with him (what the heck happened to Mark Sheppard, Will’s father?)! I had every reason to expect the moon and was horribly, horribly disappointed.
So, yesterday, when I found out that the show hadn’t definitely been canceled, I wished aloud that it had been.
Why? Because despite what I said in my last post about not being able to watch it again, if it were to come back after the strike, I know myself well enough to know that I would not be able to help myself and would watch it, hoping against hope that the writers and actors managed to pull themselves out of this six-foot-deep hole they’ve dug for themselves.
Honestly, I have too many other shows and movies on my DVR that I haven’t watched (don’t tell me what happens at the end of Tin Man; I don’t want to know if they escape the O.Z.!) to spend another hour in hope that Eick & Co. have managed to resurrect an iota of what I’d expected and wanted to be my favorite show of the season.
And if the showrunners manage to pull it off? Who’s more thrilled than I am? Nobody, that’s who.
But, look, Bionic fans — don’t accuse me of being one of the naysaying bloggers who’s crapped on the show from its start. I kept blogging and hoping and giving it another chance.
I respect your right to enjoy the show; respect this fan’s right to be (extremely) disappointed — and to say so.
And, just to show there’s no hard feelings, I’ll even include a link to the petition to save the show.
