Dexter comes to broadcast TV

I only saw a few episodes of season 1 of Dexter, the Showtime series about a serial killer with a conscience. We don’t get the network and my husband rented the 12-episode first run; I caught scenes and episodes here and there during his marathon viewing.
Even so, I find it hard to imagine how on earth CBS is going to make it ready for primetime.
Not shockingly, the premiere episode will be rated TV14-V (for violence), but there’s going to have to be a lot of dubs or bleeps to knock out an awful lot of swearing, too.
Of course, this is all due to (or thanks to) the ongoing writer’s strike.
Desperate for fresh meat (pun intended), CBS decided to put Dexter on its schedule.
According to the CBS press release, this marks the first time a full season of a “premium cable drama series will make the transition to network television.”
Sure, Sex and the City and The Sopranos jumped from HBO to TBS and A&E, respectively, but that’s still pay television.
It premieres at 10 p.m. Feb. 17. I’m sure all that edited-out stuff will provide plenty of room for commercials in the hour.
Here’s the official description:
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, DEXTER stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award-nominated Michael C. Hall (“Six Feet Under”) as Dexter Morgan, an incredibly likeable forensics expert for the Miami Metro Police Department who also happens to be a serial killer – but one with his own moral code in that he only kills murderers who can’t otherwise be brought to justice.

What? Editing out Sgt. Dokes’ foul mouth is going to take more out than all of the violence in the show. Now I’m mad I had to pay to see it, and now it’s free. At least I watched the good version. Love that show.
Ok, I don’t get Showtime, but I did rent Season 1 of Dexter on DVD like your hubby, Amy. I just don’t see how CBS is going to pull this one off on network tv. I don’t think that the violence was so overwhelmingly graphic in the show that tweaking it will have much impact. But Dexter’s sister not saying the “F” bomb every other word? Hmmm, that’s such a big part of her character. It will be interesting, I’ll say that…
