The Golden Globes telecast is officially cancelled – and not.
Basically, starting at 7 p.m. Eastern, there will be a whole red carpet event (what, the designers freaked out that no one would be wearing their gowns?), says The Hollywood Reporter.
The Golden Globes folks, in a press release, said a press conference to be covered live by NBC News will be held at 9 p.m. Eastern at the Beverly Hilton (where the usual awards ceremony and champagne dinner was to be held).
I’m guessing the “covered live by NBC News” completely frees them of any problems with the Writers Guild of America, as that removes it from the realm of entertainment and moves it into the news category.
Jorge Camara, president of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, had this to say:
We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television. We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year’s Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled.
Will any actors show up to snag their hardware? In the new format, that’s anyone’s guess. The Screen Actors Guild vowed to picket the original Golden Globes telecast, which is why it was scrapped. But given the shortened, press-conference format, perhaps they’ll show up.
The Reporter also said the modified show could include a very special NBC Dateline and a clips show from Dick Clark Productions, which usually produces the telecast.
Stay tuned for more info, and to find out Sunday who won what. Look at it this way  we won’t have to stay up until midnight to find out the GG’s best picture of the year.
But what this might mean for the Oscars? We shall see in about a month.
