A Lighter Shade of “Grey’s”

January
11

Thank goodness for small miracles. jan-11-greys.jpgLast night’s “Grey’s Anatomy” had some optomistic and downright spiritual moments, two characteristics the show has sorely lacked lately. Its main theme was sticking to what you believe, despite self-doubts and naysayers.

No, it wasn’t fun that tot Tuck got crushed by a bookshelf (did you notice dad Tucker’s aside that the shelf was heavy— probably due to all of Miranda’s medical books?), but the accident made Miranda realize that her world shouldn’t revolve around Seattle Grace. I was, however, quite surprised when she scorned fellow surgeon Hahn for not allowing her in the operating room during Tuck’s surgery.

And, oh, that feisty Mrs. O’Malley (played by Debra Monk, who was so great as Andy’s ex-wife on “NYPD Blue”)! Though I don’t totally agree with her religious views regarding marriage, it was refreshing to see someone—anyone—so passionate about her views. And Callie was just as fervent about her own feelings toward what she believes in most: love.

Religion and spirituality also came into play with the storyline about faith healer Mrs. Archer her friends. The concept of faith healing—and especially the doctors’ scientific minds taking the time to even question its effectiveness—was interesting to watch. Does faith-healing really work? Mrs. Archer and her fellow practiioners sure “stuck to their guns” when Korev insisted that it was bunk. And it was quite poignant when Mrs. Archer told Korev that he was a good boy but, due to negative events in his adulthood, he wasn’t a “good” grown-up. We viewers AND Korev knew that there was more than a kernal of truth in in that statement.

Yea that McDreamy Derek finally broke things off with McDreary Meredith. Whine, whine, whine—that’s all she’d do. Rose the nurse seems to be SO much more suited for him than Mer.

And one last note: I loved that Bailey narrated the episode, as opposed to the usual Meredith. Miranda narration was filled with insight, optimism and humor.
