Should Constantine Maroulis be on the Top 20 ‘Idols’ list?

January
19

constantine_maroulis.jpgThere are a few “American Idol” contestants I considered before leaving them off my list of the Top 20 “Idol” Contestants of All Time. I remember LaToya London having a great voice, but couldn’t recall much else about her. Joshua Gracin was memorable for his unselfish service to this country—but I left him off because he was a disservice to country music.

So when I bypassed heartthrob rocker and New York’s own Constantine Maroulis, and dismissed him as Ace Young with a rocker’s heart, I didn’t lose any sleep over it. Three things are making me reconsider, however.

1. One fan identifying herself as Samantha expressed herself politely in the comments section of one of the Top 20 posts:

I have watched all season’s of American Idol. I thought Constantine Maroulis of season 4 was amazing..I loved that he was versatile and such a good performer…I have seen him in concert and he is so talented …off stage a little shy but we found that endearing.

2. Obviously, she wasn’t alone in her support. Remote Access launched a poll (“Who was the most significant “American Idol” contestant from the first six seasons?”) late Monday in the right margin and posted every name on the Top 20 and Honorable Mentions lists as voting options. Not only was Maroulis the sole reader-submitted addition to the poll, but he received 128 votes as of this post’s publication. At that time, Maroulis was fifth on the poll behind Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood—three “Idol” winners and a runner-up who should have been that season’s champ.

3. In an e-mail exchange with Rickey from “American Idol” fan site Rickey.org (Named the No. 18 fan site for any show by Entertainment Weekly), he was equally surprised about the mellow rocker’s omission:

If you are going to have Lisa Leuschner on your list as a Top 20, why not include Constantine the shock elimination of Season 4?

While I do not dispute Rickey’s fandom or credibility, I ranked Leuschner because her voice was far superior and because she was unfairly denied the opportunity afforded to Maroulis. Take what might be Maroulis’ most memorable song (Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and put it up against Leuschner’s version of Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing” and tell me Maroulis is better. With a straight face.

After publishing this post initially, I also learned via the Arizona Republic that Maroulis “worked on Broadway, had a stint on daytime’s The Bold and the Beautiful (he’ll return this year) and was linked in the press with singer Debbie Gibson.” Still, I’m sticking with my list as is. I know, I’m stubborn.

Although I’m not yet convinced to put Mr. Maroulis on the list, I am impressed with the constructive arguments and overwhelming online support for him.

So talk amongst yourselves; I’ll give you a topic: After reviewing the list of contestants below (and the reasons for why they’re ranked by clicking each link), where should Maroulis rank on this list? Or was I right to leave him off both the Top 20 and Honorable Mention lists entirely? Discuss.

  1. Betty

    Yes, Constantine absolutely should!

  2. Jeannie

I think you entire list is silly, makes no sense and is completely WRONG !!

  3. Holly (holbridan)

This list should most certainly have the talented and oh so versatile Constantine Maroulis! His presence on American Idol shined, even though it was cut way too short. Mr. Greek Boy Maroulis Rocks!

  4. Dangrus

Constantine is definately one of the best to ever come out of Idol! Check out his new CD @ his myspace/constantinemaroulis, It Rocks!

  5. Linda

I’ve watched every season of idol, and while I remember Constantine very well, I have no idea who Lisa L? is. My favorite idol contestant ever, is Elliott Yamin. The best voice, AND the best story to every emerge from the show.

  6. Stela

Of course Constantine should be on the list. He did great justice to pop, rock and standards and, he brought a fun sexiness, with just a hint of danger, to a show that was until then, filled with boy band wannabees. As Paula said, “You’re the coolest of cool!” He’s charming, well-spoken and funny. He should have his own variety show.
As I quickly lost interest in the last couple of seasons, all I had to do was re-watch Constantine’s performances on youtube to be reminded of how exciting That Show could be.

  7. Lise

Constantine was the only reason I kept watching AI! He is the coolest, most all around talented guy I ever seen on the show! Whats the matter for you!

  8. qtwoot

While I’m not one to make insulting remarks online about any artist, I can only say that having a pretty voice is not all it takes to be an Idol, as in the case of Lisa L., who I honestly can’t even recall. I would bet if you asked most of the people who watched Idol to name 20 contestants, his name would come up almost every time. Whether they liked him or not.

Since you put this up for discussion, I’ll add that Constantine Maroulis had one of the most astonishing performances on American Idol – a performance that remains in the Top 10 All Time Performances on the show on almost every listing that I’ve seen to date. Bohemian Rhapsody. It was such an amazing performance that Queen’s own Brian May asked Constantine to record the full song for the Tribute Album KILLER QUEEN, which came out in Aug 2005. People are still talking about him, he’s on virtually every poll associated with AI, he is a spokesperson for AI, and he has carved himself out a very nice, respectable career including his music, Broadway and TV, and he did this all by himself over the past 3 years. I expect he will be around for many years to come.

Not only do I think he earned a spot in any Top 20 list of Idol performers, but I honestly think he would deserve a place in the Top 5. He is a Pop-Culture Icon – whether one loves him or hates him. But not just because he’s memorable – because he delivers the goods – every single time!

Listen to him sing the National Anthem at the 49ers/Bengals game last month. OMG He blew the place away! See it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vBIoPqvp88 A stirring rendition, no doubt!

    Thanks for listening.

  9. jem

Constantine should definately be on this list and near the top as your poll indicates! Every week Constantine showed his ability to sing any genre…pop, rock, ballads, show tunes…and proved he was not a ONE trick pony!! Bohemian Rhapsody was a ground breaking, amazing performance and that was proven when Queen asked him to record the full length version for there Killer Queen CD. That alone should have put him on your list, along with the other accomplisments you mentioned. scratching head…Hung/Clark/Jayne/Briggs

  10. ellen

You omitted Constantine but you included Sanjaya and at #5 non the less. That I do not understand.

  11. Brit

Sorry, I don’t give value to your list. Even though the list is your’s and your opinion it is filled with inconsistencies of why people are or are not on your list, or why other’s are higher on the list than some.
And when you received comments questioning your list, you basically said, it’s my list.
Now, you are getting emails and you are willing to change the list or add to your list based on those emails.

Sorry – list doesn’t wash with me – like I said, major inconsistencies.

  12. Jyes

Thanks very much for the opportunity to discuss whether or not Constantine should be included in your poll.
Since your basic arugment against including him seems to be a comparison of vocal ability with Lisa Leuschner, yet you include the likes of William Hung and Blake Lewis, I suspect you must have other reasons for leaving off the one Idol on this list whose outstanding vocal and acting skills could and did get kudos from critics in one of theater’s most vocally challenging leading roles (Jacques Brel).

My personal reasons: Constantine is a natural comedien (The Soup, The Wedding Singer) one of, if not THE most versatile musician (“Child, You’re the Revolution” to Verdi opera a-capella-), a sought-after TV host (Yahoo Buzz, GDNY Idol Insider) and the only Idol alum to my knowledge who has taken the huge risk of putting out his own record even though he had other choices.

Or maybe this: the AI Magazine that has out-sold all others is the issue with Constantine on the cover; indeed, that alone should be worth his inclusion on your list.

    THANKS for asking!

  13. NCIdolFan

As a resident of North Carolina, the state from which many finalists (and a winner) have emerged (Clay Aiken, Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington just to name some of the top ones), I’d have to say that Constantine Maroulis still remains the name and face and voice that I consider most memorable and most outstanding. I know everyone has their own tastes, but he has shown through continuous work since the show that he’s got the skillz to be a standout performer in several different avenues of entertainment. His CD, a totally indie effort, was actually on the Billboard indie chart top 10 at its release, his work on the Broadway and off-Broadway stage delighted many audiences, his work on Yahoo! Buzz was anticipated each week of AI last year, he quickly learned and often out-acted his co-stars on the #2 tv network soap in the world last summer, and he remains the immediately recognizable and interviewable name and face of “American Idol” wherever he goes. He is respectful of the show, and praises it for the opportunities it brings all the contestants, and is smart, articulate, has golden pipes and knows how to use them.
I’ve seen him on stage, on tv, and in concert, and there’s just no one else in my experience that brings such depth and entertainment.
There are several on your list that I cannot even remember, and some that I would exclude because I just don’t enjoy their work at all. Some are nice people, and had pretty voices, but what have they done since their time on the show?
Bottom line: Mr. Maroulis deserves to be in your top 10, nay, top 5. For me he is #1, the only one I’m really interested in following other than to say “that’s nice” when I hear their music. Thanks for letting me take up space.

  14. Trish

    HI
Don’t want to put you down or anything, but your list does not matter outside of this blog. Make you list any way you like it. LOL

We all have our own list… carry on

  15. Lucene

Well, everyone already pretty much said what I was going to say about the extremely talented Constantine Maroulis …. seriously. I can’t believe you included Sanjaya and William Hung, but left off Constantine in favor of Lisa, because in your opinion she sang better? Where is the logic in that?

  16. Lisa

It seems that you did not even bother to check the idols post-Idol career before compiling your list. For example, why would you include Nikko Smith who has not done anything, but leave off Anthony Fedorov, who had a role in an off-Broadway play the Fantasticks and has been performing and touring ? And why should it come as a surprise to you that Constantine was on Broadway ? Tell me, did you just pull those names out of a hat ? That’s what it looks like.

Also, just because an artist has a small but very Internet-active fanbase, does not mean that he is popular in the real world. In the Internet world Bo always beats Carrie. In the real world – not so much.

My advice to you is to scratch your list, check your facts and then come back with a new one, this one based on reality.

  17. Madison

It’s true what the person above said. Everyone will have their own list and no two people will have the same list. Your list is fine as it is. It’s you opinion and you are entitled to it.

For me Constantine is my all time favorite on the show and is someone whose career I continue to follow with great interest. His voice does something to me that I can’t explain. It’s gorgeous to me and also has a very unique sound that I simply love.

I agree with Jyes that he also has a great sense of humor and although he is so intense on stage, he is humble and a bit shy in person. He’s just an interesting performer. I love him.

  18. chloerose2@yahoo.com

If the ability to sing well is the criteria you used to include people on your list then William Hung and Sanjaya should never have made the cut.

If performance skills are what the criteria is all about then I might see adding Sanjaya on down the list because he did entertain (a wee bit).

But if singing skills and performance cirteria are what you are looking for to include people on your list then you most certainly would have to include the incredible, dazzling Constantine Maroulis.

I don’t think there is one genre of music that the boy can’t sing. He is just one awesome talent and to leave him off any list is just a travesty. He and Bo changed American Idol, they broke the machine and made it better for the up and comers. He was the first and the best.

  19. Jen

Constantine should rank just after Clay Aiken. I remember listening to Seacrest’s show on KISS and he said something like Constantine’s shocking 6th place finish caused more viewer protest and commotion at the Idol offices than any other event before or since.

With a straight face: He’s far better than that Lisa girl.

  20. Susan

No matter how you look at the word “significant”. Constantine should be included on the list. He was different from any other contestant in previous seasons – older, educated, multi-talented, a performer, not just a singer. When he was voted out earlier than he should have been, it shocked everyone – he was all over the news programs.

Constantine has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard – I saw him perform on a Broadway stage – he was incredible, mesmerizing. He’s done so much since his Idol run – unlike some of the idols on your list who have faded into oblivion – some of the names I don’t even recognize. Constantine started his own production company, recorded a CD, has been on Broadway, off-Broadway, television and has toured in many areas. He continues to be a spokesperson for AI and his performance of Bohemian Rhapsody is always on the lists of the top 10 Idol performances of all time.

Here’s Constantine holding an audience in the palm of his hand – what a performer!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gZXUxiPNPw

  21. Tammy

Constantine should be on the top 20 list, this list is soooo bogus you have Sanjaya on the top 5 and Constantine is not on the list he had alot of great performance better than Sanjaya. Constantine had one bad performance and Sanjaya had alot of bad performance and he’s on the top 5 so I say Constantine so should be in the top 5 list or at least the top 10

  22. Felicia

Just adding my “vote” to the list: Top 20 Idol contestant list would HAVE to include Constantine Maroulis. An amazingly charismatic performer, versatile, funny, hard working and gracious. A stand-out in his and every Idol season.

  23. kevin

This is fun, but you should read Justin Guarini’s great blogs about Idol, which I stumbled on at Fancast (thebiz.fancast.com) His writing is about the best insider stuff I’ve read on Idol. thebiz.fancast.com

  24. Gerry

It kind of depends on what the criteria are for making the list. But regardless of what the criteria are, the list is just plain silly. William Hung? Seriously? He wasn’t even a contestant, he got laughed out of the room in the first audition. Why don’t you add Crazy Dave and the dude that idolized Clay? They weren’t contestants either. And Sanjaya? Please. LaToya London should have been on the list if for no other reason than she had one of the finest voices to ever be on the Idol stage. She didn’t last longer because she would put you to sleep, she had no stage presence. And you realize that Kellie Pickler, who didn’t make your list, has a bigger career than at least 10 of the top 20? If Constantine deserved to be on the list, he’d just sneak in at 20, and half of these people wouldn’t even be on the list at all. You did no research on this at all, you just picked 20 names out of your be-hind.

  25. Kitty

I find it hard to believe that Constantine was left off this list and people like William Hung who actually was never even on American Idol were listed. I don’t understand the reasoning for some of these. If Lisa (who I have no idea who she is or how she sung) was added due to her voice, then why was William Hung added? Makes no sense.

Furthermore, who could ever forget Constantine’s Bohemian Rhapsody? Apparently Killer Queen thought him memorable enough to request him to record it on their Killer Queen Tribute album.

It’s been three years now since Constantine was kicked off of American Idol. And yes, I still carry a grudge and will never believe he was voted off.

I’ve flown many miles to see this charismatic performer on tour and in Broadway and off-Broadway shows. I’ll be hitting the skies in another month to see him perform once again. He’ll always be memorable to me, more so than any of the ones you have listed. If it was my list, he’d be at the very top.

  26. Jezebel

This list seems not to have any credibility at all because Constantine Maroulis should have been one of the top AI. I would like to know your basis in including these people on your list – talent, popularity, accomplishments post-AI. Constantine placed only at sixth but his talent and personality did not make him fade into oblivion. His accomplishments to-date are much more than any of those that finished higher than he did can speak of.

  27. jay

DUDE…YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN’ ME!!??? CON SHOULD BE AT LEAST TOP 10. YOU ARE A HATER CLEARLY. TAMYRA? HUNG AND SANJAYA? DOOLITTLE? ARE YOU SERIOUS????

HE HAS A BODY OF WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE RESPECTED LIKE HIM OR NOT. PERIOD.

  28. Domestcgodess

    MOST DEFFINATELY!!!

  29. DEBBIE

CONSTANTINE should definitely be on your list. He is an amazing, talented, real performer. Just take a listen to his CD and see for your self.

  30. Carol

Yes, Constantine should be on the list. Simon Cowell said Constantine was astonishing in his rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. Check out http://www.youtube.com and his CD “Constantine”.

William Hung simply can’t sing or dance. I doubt if he can ever do Broadway.

  31. Randy

You only need to see-and hear the below! And Yes, With a straight face!!
I’m telling YOU- Constantine Maroulis is better! Get Real!

    http://www.hyfntrak.com/killerqueen/AFF19161/go.php

    http://hollywoodrecords.go.com/killerqueen/

Dude- You really messed up leaving Constantine off.

Is this list a joke? Makes no sense!

  32. CathyEM

I was hoping that Elliott had earned a higher place in your ranking. Besides having released 2 CDs in the past year and having a smash top 40 hit, he was the first Season 5 Idol to have a solo concert, he’s had two popular tours this year, appeared on a number of talk shows, and has performed on Bold and the Beautiful and Liberty Heights. He was co-chair of this year’s “Promise to Remember Me” campaign for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and met with congressmen on Capitol Hill to discuss funding of diabetes research, is the global chairperson of the “Inspired by Diabetes” campaign sponsored by Eli Lilly, and was also involved in the first United Nations-desinated World Diabetes Day events in NYC. Randy Jackson included Elliott on his new CD project to debut in March. Elliott participates in 10-day USO tour in February, then travels to Angola to do charity work there. Meanwhile, he’s working on his second CD. He’s got to be one of the hardest-working people in show business today, not to mention one with a bit heart and truly a gift for music.

  33. CathyEM

That was a BIG heart, not a bit heart!!

  34. JanC

I just want to add my agreement with everything everyone before me has said about Constantine. He is incredible and extremely talented, and I wish your list would have given him more credit. He has seriously loyal fans who follow him to venues and watch him on TV and You Tube and every other way there is. I have never before “fallen in love” with such an artist, but there it is. He’s amazing and wonderful, and I would definitely have put him in the top 5.

  35. Mary

You said: I ranked Leuschner because her voice was far superior..

Can the same be said for William Hung? Sanjaya? Not to mention your honorable mentions.. Antonella, Corey, Jonathan, & Kenneth.

Constantine has what most of those on your list lack. Versatility. Who else can go onstage & perform Aerosmith, Queen, Rob Thomas, Jeff Buckley, Stephen Lynch, Van Morrison, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Billy & the Beaters, Jonathan Larson, Jacques Brel, The Doors, The Stones, Bonnie Raitt,& Rogers&Hart? Few.

If you had seen him last winter in “Jacques Brel”, there is no way you could have left him off this list. He held his own on stage next to Tony winner Robert Cuccioli, which is an accomplishment. Not only is Constantine’s voice good… it soars. He doesn’t just sing notes, he tells stories.

  36. peep

Lisa said “Also, just because an artist has a small but very Internet-active fanbase, does not mean that he is popular in the real world.”

Hello? Whatcha got here is every single member of Constantine’s internet fan base – all 30 of them – swarming your blog.

The only place where Constantine is popular, or talented, is in the minds of those thirty or so fans who are so obsessed with him that they become outraged when he’s left out of a silly internet poll.

William Hung sold 5 times as many cd’s as Constantine did. Get over it.

  37. Trainwreck

Ooooh boy, dude. You definitely opened the floodgate for the ConFans. There are a few rabid confans who spam every idol-related poll they find. Not unlike the Claymates, they’re relentless. The same usernames pop up on every blog’s comments reminding the unwashed masses that their boy is a SUPER!!!!STAR!!!!

In all honesty, he should have made the top 20 – but I suspect not for the reasons the ConFans would give you.

  38. Cheryl

You have your Top Idols and I have mine.
Constantine is on the top of my list.
He has it all, talent charisma and charm.

  39. Kelly

You’re concerning yourself over a poll that has Constantine way up. My question to you would be, can’t people clear their cookies and vote multiple times? I’m sure there’s a group of his supporters that have figured out a way to increase his numbers. In addition, you obviously spent a lot of time and took great care in making your decisions. You don’t need to second guess them. Lastly, it’s basically just one person’s opinion and everyone should realize that and if they don’t like it, stop reading.

  40. baba

You know how he came to the Philippines? Ayala Corporation had a meeting on how they could come up with a super spectacular, super special anniversary celebration. All those involved shrieked “let’s bring Constantine here!” And that was the best sooooo far! They brought in queer guys, elliot yamin and taylor hicks, et al but none can’t compare to the promotions, advertising, and marketing done for constantine! A half-page advertisement with his face(oh GOD! if looks could kill!)on one of the leading newspapers here and posters everywhere in the Greenbelt area … and many more. I could go on and on. He’s the only one on my list!

  41. Neilson

I agree, Constantine really should have been on the list.

  42. Kahuna

You favored Ace Young over Constantine???? How you be taken seriously? LOL! My goodness. One columnists put it best when he said that Constantine is Cary Grant compared to Ace. LOL. If you need further proof of Constantine’s greatness do get his CD, Constantine. It is awesome. Constantine has skills that NO AI to date possesses. He’s a vocal artist.

  43. Kelly

Baba writes: half-page advertisement with his face(oh GOD! if looks could kill!)

So, let me get this straight, you’re basing your opinion on Constantine strictly on his looks? Where in your post do you talk about his vocal abilities?

  44. NewCarolina

Constantine Maroulis is my moon, sun and stars. He is the king of the universe. I love him so much I moved to NY to be with him. He is the bestest artist in the whole wide world.

  45. Maggie

Absolutely! I’m amazed he wasn’t on the list to begin with. Great artist!

  46. Vicky

I have traveled to every Constantine Maroulis event since he left American Idol. He is so kind to his middle aged, obese and lonely fans. I lost 100 pounds in the hopes that I may, someday, get with him IYKWIMAITYD. Constantine is going to be a HUGE star.

  47. Koukla

Constantine is Greek man as such should be top number one on all lists not just music. Being Greek man huge responsiblity to world and woman of world. All woman of world with Greek man to show them ways of good sex and love Constantine able to make woman want to love him and all men with sexy Greek voice. Constantine make me panty pudding in Greek recipe.

  48. deluded r' us

I feel you are entitled to your opinion and don’t need to retract. Constantine would barely squeak into my top 20. He did a good cover of Queen and that’s about it. From what I gather, he is a classic asshole, is inconsistent in his performances and has made a career out of accepting ANY job that will pay. Bingo anyone? Anywho, playing a 3rd tier part on a Soap opera that only grannies watch, is hardly noteworthy. His stints on Broadway have not lead to anything else either. Wonder why? If you compare his “accomplishments” my guess is you would find that many idols has gotten similar gigs. Leave him off, it’s only your opinion anyway.

  49. Bliss

Constantine should be on the list. He’s a great entertainer and has a wonderful voice.

  50. Kiki

It is my destiny to marry Constantine. I am Greek. I speak the Greek language. I know how to cook Greek. Constantine will choose me as his wife. I understand Greek men. He will cheat, yes. All Greek men do. And as a Greek woman it is my duty to accept that. As long as he is my legal husband, and I his legal wife, I do not care if he cheats. It’s the Greek way and is the accepted way.

  51. Angie

NO! It is I he will marry! I had 15 minutes with him in a hotel room 3 or 4 years ago and therefore, quid pro quo, I chased him across the country and gave him a BJ so he owes me EVERYTHING! He is MINE MINE MINE!!!AAAAAGHHHHH!!!! More Lithium, please.
Also, I maintain a website dedicated to him and that amazing night in Syracuse and am on it with my brainless asskissing minions 24/7 yet ironically, I claim to hate him. What do you mean he doesn’t remember that night or me?

  52. Reality Check

^And this is why Constantine’s career is in the shitter. With fans like these…...........

  53. Laughing

Wow, I see both the GOOFY SHEEP herd and the equally crazy PINKS are all here. The herd of sheep are deaf, blind and rendered illogical by the rose colored glasses they wear. The result is they think Maroulis is the greatest entertainer EVAH. Meh, not even close. And he’s as lacking as a human being as he is as a singer and actor. As for the “Pinks” they live to bash the Herd, despite the fact they’re as nuts over him as the people they bash. He’s really just not that special. They brag he was on Broadway-uh yeah, strange that the show closed shortly after. His soap gig? Ratings took a nosedive. His CD? BOMB. His recent jobs? Singing in the coat/underwear department at an Ohio Steinmart, followed by calling bingo in a Wisconsin casino. Impressive? Not.

  54. newcarolina

    Yeah, the real newcarolina, lol

Constantine’s performance on AI4 brought a new level of competition to the playing field. But, since you’re question implies a list of current significant Idols I’ll speak to present accomplishments…as no other Idol has touched so many arenas of entertainment.
Constantine has started his own recording company, Sixth Place Records, and released his first solo debut album, “Constantine,” on his own label. To date his album is the highest grossing “true indie” release ever by an Idol, and he did it completely himself maintaining his own artistic identity and showed he is smart in business as well. He has toured Solo both internationally and nationally with several band arrangements and will be touring again this Feb. He has also performed Solo at countless charity benefits…such as his recent singing appearance in LA at the Lili Claire Foundation.
As noted above Constantine played “Sammie” in the Broadway show The Wedding Singer. He also starred Off Broadway in “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well,” a challenging and critically acclaimed piece, and astounded audiences with his beautiful vibrant ringing vocals in both. He has been approached by many other shows, Broadway and Off Broadway, as well as touring companies and we’ll probably be seeing quite a bit more in the future there. He started a production company, Sixth Place Productions and is currently working on possibly producing a show on Broadway, as well as several other projects.
Constantine has had his own internet Yahoo! Buzz show, and did on camera weekly Idol analysis for GDNY. As also stated above he was in a starring role on the Bold and the Beautiful where they built a new set for his character. He also acted as a judge on MTV’s Little Talent Show. He was featured in the highly awarded children’s book “Growing Up With Loukoumi” as the voice of Gus the Bear.
Perhaps one of the most important factors in the need for his inclusion in your Idol Top 20 list, should be the charity work Constantine does thru Make a Wish Foundation, Make a Difference, The Autism Society, VSA – Very Special Arts, The Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund, etc.etc.etc. He was recently awarded the Humanitarian Award for Artistic Achievement by the HTSF for being a role model for youth to strive toward their artistic and scholastic goals.
No other Idol has come close to the diverse accomplishments of Constantine in my opinion… thank you for you time :) ~nc

  55. L.S.

Quote: “Lastly, it’s basically just one person’s opinion and everyone should realize that and if they don’t like it, stop reading.”

Response: Funny, but the gentleman who made the list is the one who kindly opened the discussion and gave people the chance to share their views. He will still make his list as he sees fit, but I find it refreshing that he’s at least willing to listen to what he fans want to share and to learn what he has accomplished.

And extra special blessings to those of you who so predictably come to add fuel to the conversation flames. You’re such jokers, you silly girls. You’re doing a fine job of helping to keep his name front and center by keeping his fans talking and even impersonating some. We all appreciate the dedicated service you offer.

  56. Whatevia

If you are trying to convince people that Constantine is a big star, you’re failing miserably. Perspective is important. He is not “front and center” to anyone but his few over-the-top fans. He started his own lame record company because no one else was willing to sign him. He has/had no record deal. His record company lost big bucks as he couldn’t even sell a fraction of what he had printed up. He was “stunt” cast in an off-Broadway play and it didn’t work. His impending huge tour includes 7 lounge-like venues all concentrated in a small area. He has no tour sponsor. He was a spokesperson on some internet show that nobody has ever heard of. I think you get the picture.

  57. the REALLY REAL NewCarolina

Someone keeps impersonating me on the internets, lol.

Constantine is a Class A entertainer and a saint. The man gives his precious time to charities like the Make A Wish Foundation. He even gives money to homeless people and compliments them on their dancing talents.

The people of Hollywood need to recognize his talent as we his fans do. He needs his own variety show like the Vaudeville acts they had when I was a child.

Please include him in your list of top 20. And Constantine, know that I love you so much. We all know how hard you a working and you just need that one lucky break.

    Kisses to you darlin!

  58. Lisa

    I tried to add a name and I can’t. What’s up with that ?

And Constantine is now ranked above Daughtry, Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson. If only the real world agreed with his fanbase – maybe he would have sold more than 20,000 CD’s.

  59. Samantha

    YIKES….LADIES…CONSTANTINE WAS 6TH ON SEASON 4 THAT
SPEAKS FOR IT SELF…NOT TO MENTION WHEN HE LEFT THE FRENZY THAT FOLLOWED WAS UNBELIEVABLE. THE WOMAN THAT SAID HE HAS ONLY 30 FANS HAS LOST HER MIND…DURING SEASON 4 HE HAD A MILLION POSTS ON IDOL’S MESSAGE BOARDS…DO YOU HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT WAS ONLY 30 WOMEN??? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT BEFORE SEASON 5..ONLY THE WINNER AND SECOND PLACE GOT A RECORD DEAL AND ANY SPONSERSHIP FROM AMERICAN IDOL…YES, AMERICAN IDOL GAVE ALL THE CONTESTANTS THE OPPORTUNITY JUST BY BEING ON THEIR SHOW WHICH CONSTANTINE IS VERY GRATEFUL FOR AS HE HAS SAID MANY TIMES..LADIES…IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN HIM IN PERSON….TRY TO AND YOU WILL SEE THE TALENT AND ENTERTAINMENT OF A LIFETIME…THIS IS NOT TO DIMINISH ANY OTHER CONTESTANT AS I BELIEVE THAT ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE ON IDOL WERE TALENTED. I HAVE SUPPORTED THEM BY PURCHASING THEIR CD’S AS I FEEL THAT THEY ENTERTAINED US SO WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM…ESPECIALLY CONSTANTINE AS HE HAD NO HELP FROM IDOL AS HE WAS ON BEFORE SEASON 5. IT IS HARD TO GET A RADIO STATION TO PLAY MUSIC FROM A INDIE RECORDING…SO LET’S SUPPORT OUR GUY AND ANY OTHER YOUNG PERSON FROM IDOL THAT YOU LIKE…REMEMBER THEY ENTERTAINED US….

  60. Betty Boop

You bet he should be on the list.. I would say in the top 10 of the list..

He is the only IDOL from all 6 Seaons that I have bee interested enough in to follow his career or bother to even go to his shows..

He has managed to stay in the Press and make regular TV appearances for a much longer period of time than any other previous IDOLS that did not place in the top 2. He landed a Soap Opera gig and stared in two Broadway shows..

  61. Fred

Personally, I think you made this list just so Constantine’s fans and his haters would all post here … Believe it or not, there is actually a “fan club” that ALL they do is bash Constantine Maroulis … and I notice several of them have posted here. That’s awesome. Hey, for that reason alone he should be on your list. Can you imagine how ate up a person must be to waste their time talking about how much they hate someone day after day? A lot of them are mad because Constantine didn’t respond to their pathetic advances. A woman scorned or some such drivel.

  62. Rori

Take a close look at the mindless drivel on those million AI posts. There is one woman who comes in and posts that she is leaving a breakfast buffet of timbits and such. Then there are 30 posts thanking her that follow. That is the substance of those million posts.

  63. Denise

    Get real!

Of course Constantine should be on the list. He is a better vocalist than the many of the people on your list, and his post-idol career has been better too.

  64. Reeiah

I’ve watched all seasons of AI. Kelly is my favorite idol. I think she personifies what that show SHOULD be about. I have to admit I have no clue who Lisa L is. I read what you wrote about her but I don’t remember her. I do think Constantine should be in the top 10. What do we base the list on..you mentioned William made a lot of money ..Sanjaya threw caution to the wind..Ok..where does that place them in comparison to Constantine? Constantine has done Broadway, B&B, numerous charity events such as Autism and Make-a-Wish.He trained and graduated from the Boston Conservatory. What’s interesting to me is that AI the machine continues to call on Constantine to promote the show. He has been all over tv giving commentary, promoting the game and being a spokesman for AI. They see his value to them even thought he was voted off #6.
All of this speaks to what he has done, and honestly there’s much more. What I would really like to comment on is how I feel when I speak to him or listen to his music. He has a beautiful voice and has an ability to really interpret lyrics in a way that either moves me or is just a lot of fun! He’s humble and able to laugh at himself and not take everything so seriously.
I really don’t understand your list, it doesn’t make sense to me, but for me the average AI fan Constantine is in my top 10 in any poll or list!
    Thanks.

  65. skylights

Obviously what happened here is some Constantine internet fan group found out about this poll and swarmed it. Internet polls aren’t statistically valid.

My vote’s for LaToya London. And I disagree with the poster who said she had no stage presence. I was riveted every time she performed! Obviously others thought she had stage presence too, since they hired her to be in The Color Purple.

  66. Allison

I gather this blog is basically about Maroulis. I can’t say I was impressed one way or another. The puppy dog eyes got old real quick. But, he does sing OK.

That comment about Josh Gracin being a disservice to country music; Huh?? I definitely don’t get that one. I guess this is just one person’s opinion.

Clay Aiken does not belong in 7th place. Especially behind such as Wm Hung or Sanjya who can’t even sing. Corey Clark should not be on this list, period.

Well, as I said, all this is just one person’s opinion and it seems very slanted.

  67. bridget

you have SANJAYA as number five but no Constantine AT ALL. right there, that tells me that your list is crap

  68. legman

Interesting that this blog about Constantine has generated far more comments than even the original blog—68 vs 17.
Whether you love him or not, better singer or not, better performer, etc., etc., he belongs on your list because he is INTERESTING!
    Obviously.
    LOL

  69. Fatty Arbuckle

    Koukla is funny!

  70. Kaelah

    Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hated IA…It was just on and I hear this voice- here comes out this adorable guy, I loved his style his charm, his everything!
Constantine, Is the only one I seen to make the show worth watching…and I still want to see More of him on TV!!

Constantine is gonna be around with or without this list-
    Just you wait and see.
Haters – lol well they are scorned woman. Boring, sometimes almost funny, In a sad way.

    **Long Live Constantine!***

  71. Donna

He had it – He had it in the palm of his hand. And lets face it-if you are a lover or hater -he blew it. He made bad choices, believed his own hype and didn’t stay humble. Oh and he poked that skanky chick Angie. Like I said bad choices. Have you seen her face? He was better off with the fat 40+ year old has beens. That Angie chick has the face of a horse, the breath of a sewer and the mind of a psycho. Can you say UCLA Psych Ward Brit needs a roomie

  72. Patti

Quote: Take what might be Maroulis’ most memorable song (Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and put it up against Leuschner’s version of Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing” and tell me Maroulis is better. With a straight face. (end quote)

Maroulis is better. Said with not even so much as a smirk. He.is.
