The Wire: Let’s hear from Marlo

I figured I’d keep it up and share another interview with a cast member of The Wire, in honor of the third episode of the final season.

This week, we have Jamie Hector, who plays the westside drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield, the man ultimately responsible for all those dead bodies in the abandoned buildings all over the city.
LAist conducted this interview with Hector before the season began. I learned a few things I hadn’t previously known—for example, Hector taped a couple of episodes of Heroes before the strike began, but those are scenes from episodes that came after the abrupt season finale we got. His character is named Benjamin “Knox”Washington, but that’s all he would say.
Then, some stuff I did, such as why last season hit a nerve with so many viewers — the four teens at the heart of the season.
Here’s some tidbits, and click on the above link for the full interview:
Why is Chris (Marlo’s henchman played by Gbenga Akinnagbe) so loyal to Marlo? Is that loyalty based on fear?
It’s not fear. That loyalty Chris has shown is based on respect he has for Marlo’s leadership. He respects the hard work Marlo has put in to working his way up to the position that he is in right now as the top guy.Why does Marlo reach out to Michael (Tristan Wilds)? What does he see in Michael?
He sees himself in Michael. He was just like Michael, he wouldn’t take anything from anyone. Michael knows that once they start supplying you, they own you. So as you see early on, Michael doesn’t put his hand out for anyone or anything. Marlo sees that and likes that Michael has this knowledge at such a young age.
Tune in to HBO at 9 tonight for the third episode. Then, just seven left.
