Your daily Jericho fix (Saturday, T minus 10 and counting)

February
2

OK, here’s my first pre-premiere debate:

Jake & Heather or Jake & Emily? [ducks]

Now before all you Jeather and Jemilys out there start freakin’ out (steady, Clarke, steady!), I would like to posit this: Both sides have valid arguments.

jeatherkiss.jpg

I do fall in the Jeather camp myself. But I’ve always been partial to brunettes. Plus, Heather’s like the female Macgyver, in a good way. She’s also not a whiner. She’s a good girl, but that doesn’t mean she can’t be with Jake. Jake used to be a bad boy, but he’s anything but anymore.

jemilykiss.jpg

As for Emily, she does have history going for her. She’s obviously no dummy and she’s a badass. Sure, she tried to be a good girl for a while and got engaged to an investment banker (in Jericho? huh?), but she never wanted to leave her hometown because she knew that someday, someway, Jake would come back.

I know there are threads debating this issue on forum after forum out there, but this is one of those subjects one can’t debate enough. And with Season 2 fast approaching, it gains a new urgency.

Why? Because, as we all know, Heather’s coming back to town to face a newly reunited Jemily.

So what should Jake do? Stay with Emily? Grab Heather when she comes back to town and plant one on her like she did to him way back in the day?

Discuss.

I vote, loudly, for option number two.

Of course, I might leap so far out of my chair that I’d need to have my roof replaced again.

Let’s see what the new season holds. For that matter, let’s see who Jake holds.

As I am sure the discussion will be lively as this topic always turns. I’ll just put my 2 cents worth in now.
I like character of Heather better and that is most likely not ging to change. I think Jake is becoming a new man through this trial and tribulation stage. He needs someone like Heather to walk through it with him.
Now before I get attacked for having my own opinion, I’ll just add unless they give the Emily’s character a total aboutface personality change, my opinion is never going to change.
I beleive she is his past and he doesn’t like his past.

We’ll have to wait and watch but I really hope they don’t gag me with too much FORCED J&E scenes.

Absolutely option number 2. Aside from the fact that I just generally prefer the character of Heather, I think it also fits better with the overwhelming arc of forgiving himself, moving forward and forging the life he’s been trying to for the last five years.

For the true redemption storyline to be complete, the hero has to leave his past behind. I think he should end up with Heather. I also find the character of Emily to be boring when she isn’t being annoying, so it really isn’t much of a choice for me.

OTOH, if he were to just plant one on Heather, she should slap him. For being an idiot and ignoring her for a month, and for being an idiot and not realizing she might be in trouble in New Bern as well, and then for being an idiot and thinking that he could just kiss her.

So I vote for Jake realizing that Emily is not his future and working to make Heather realize that she was right all along, and that he was an…yes wait, for it…an idiot.

Hmmmm. As a former Jemily fan I do see the interest in that storyline. Having recently switched to Jeather I feel that I can say this. I watched the episodes again but, this time, I made myself be unbiased. I suppose it worked because I was finally able to see the chemistry between Jeather. I think Jemily is a comfortable feeling like we sometimes have with someone in real life. But, comfortable isn’t passion and I see that passion with Jeather.

  6. Debby

I am a Jake Heather fan for several reasons. The first one was the chemistry between them. The second being any woman who lets go of her fiance and then jumps back into a relationship isn’t mature enough to be in a relationship. The last one is one my daughtes say there is no point in going backwards and Jake and Emily together is going backwards. Emily needs to find out why she could lose Roger and not be at all sad for the death of that relationship. Then she needs to move on with a new more exciting man. She doesn’t need to go backwards either. For Jake and Heather their relationship is forward growth. I agree with C if I was Heather and Jake grabbed me and kissed me I would slap him, now a big hug that would be good.

    Glued to my seat.

I’m definitely in the Jeather camp. But, here’s how I see it. Jeather can’t work until Jemily work out their feelings. It seems that the Jemily relationship ended unresloved many moons ago. I see Jemily workin’ it but Jeather prevailing in the end.

  9. Amy Vernon

Wow, where are the Jemilys? I know they’re out there somewhere. :-)

I would tend to agree with those who comment that Heather needs to slap Jake if he tries to plant one on her. But I would like to defend his not going to New Bern for her. He asked about her every time someone from New Bern came around. And he didn’t only ask about Eric when the men came back from New Bern without Eric and Heather.

And when he was in jail with Eric, almost the first thing he asked was about Heather (or I remember it that way, at least). He does care for her very much.

I also can’t be too hard on him for not pursuing a romance with her after she planted one on him, seeing as the two were still trying to help their town cope with the aftermath of the worst attack ever on American soil and all.

But Jess, you’re absolutely right. Nothing with Jeather can be worked out until Jemily is resolved. And there are an awful lot of unresolved feelings there for both Jake and Emily.

“Wow, where are the Jemilys? I know they’re out there somewhere.”

Not to worry; I’m sure they’ll both be along shortly. :-)

As far as Heather’s trip to New Bern is concerned, I think it’s the observation (and perhaps the frustration) of many J/H fans that Jake wasn’t worried enough. Yes, he did ask about her, but at many turns (such as when Stanley came back ro Jericho and both Eric and Heather didn’t), Jake seemed to take it for granted that she was okay, despite his obvious concern when she left him at Black Jack. There are even some of us who suspect that Maggie was supposed to be Heather in several episodes, but that those scripts may have gotten a hasty rewrite.

(The real-world answer seems to be that Sprague/Heather was written out after episode 13—there have been hints that this was contractual, so perhaps her option for the “back nine” episodes wasn’t picked up for whatever reason—and the writers probably had to work her name into the episodes while also hedging their bets in case she didn’t come back. In the end, of course, she reappeared, and all seems well.)

Well, I do love the Jake and Heather pairing. I was honestly insulted when TPTB shoved Emily down my throat [I hate that Emily professes love to Roger but is disloyal (even if only in her mind), that’s where she lost me].
Heather’s qualities other than being a female Mcguyver (good call)and being an all around decent person haven’t been explored. I think that she would balance Jake out, they could do crazy things but actually have a plan and not just hope for the best! Jake needs someone like Heather to believe in him especially when things get sticky (which Emily didn’t).
But then I DO love Heather, and of course want her to be with the “hero”. :)

  12. Mary

I favor Heather with Jake (but only if he realizes how marvelous she really is). Emily so far is self-absorbed and self-centered; I got the feeling that poaching the generator back from her father’s place was more about her and Jake, not for the overall good of the town. Let me say (ducking Thurbers’ fastball) that I enjoyed Ashley Scott’s turn on “Dark Angel” (double-ducking), but Emily Sullivan has been a totally unsympathetic character so far on Jericho and has not shown any redeeming survival skills…yet….

  13. Starlace

Well, someone from the Jem camp had to jump in here! For now, I want to see Jake and Emily together…it probably won’t last, because, let’s be honest, stagnant, happy relationships just don’t make for good tv. But they have too much unresolved emotion to just move on. Emily tried and it didn’t work because something, er, someone, kept her tied to Jericho. Jake’s been kissing quite a few girls, but I think it’s clear where his feeling really lies. (If he was really into Heather, he wouldn’t have ignored her for so long after that kiss!) That’s not to say there’s no future for them, but for now, Jake and Emily need resolution. There is too much left unsaid because they never really ended their relationship in the past…Jake just upped and left. Personally, I just don’t see the chemistry between Jake and Heather and honestly, I think she deserves someone who actually appreciates her, but I also think it would be pretty dumb to resolve this quadrangle (or, really it’s just a triangle again) any time soon.

That being said, I want to see Jake and Emily live happily together in tv paradise because to me, they’re just meant to be. The likelihood of that happening, however, is about as likely as Stanley ever paying his bar tab.

  14. AKansan

I loved all of the fantastic little moments between Jake and Heather in the first season. He just has to come to his senses eventually! I’ll be waiting on the edge of my seat.

  15. scifiaddict

I am a Jem fan I don’t think Jake and Heather would make a good fit. Emily is more capable of being someone who can fight alongside Jake not just be his sidekick.Emily knows him and she loves him flaws and all. Emily has her own flaws and wrinkles and doesn’t expect Jake live up to a standard, she just expects him to be himself. I think Jake likes the fact that Emily is straight with him and doesn’t just say its all gonna be okay even if she has no idea. Also for someone who is supossed to be a modern female heroine Heather seems to need to be rescued a lot.

  16. Liberty

I am a definite Jake and Heather person. It is so rare any more that writers and directors let two truly interesting characthers with such wonderful chemistry have a true romance. Generally they just hook-up two cliched characters with zero “pull” between them. Only on Jericho they did both. Too bad Jon Turtletaub left Carol Barbee in charge while he worked on the new National Treasure. He obviously saw something between Jake and Heather. Still I take comfort in that there is no way happily ever after with Jake and Emily will last. Very hard to make “happy” interesting. Especially when one of the pair is so uninteresting and without purpose.

  17. Mtnred

Jake and Heather fan from day one. Jake has been an idiot and definitely needs to get over the past. Emily is so self-centered that I just get annoyed every time she’s on screen but he apparently has to work all that out. (sorry, Ms. Scott-not a dig at the actress) I believe that Jake doesn’t deserve Heather at this point. She deserves to be adored for her wonderful self. (put your hand down, C. We all know that you volunteered for the job a long time ago) LOL. Jake and Heather have so much chemistry in their brief time in their scenes that it jumps off the screen. I want MORE of that.

  18. erika

I am yet another Jake/Heather fan. I HATED Emily the first time through, but after rewatching my shiny DVDs, the hate for her subsided. And I totally understand why Jake was still drawn to her. But, I like Heather more. I like that Jake never forgot her when she was gone. I like that he easily let her take over fixing the air thingy in the shelter without hesitation. He is not intimidated by her competence, and the hug he gave her before she left for New Bern was not a casual hug, IMO. I swooned, and I know others did as well.

On a not quite related note, I hope that when Heather does make it back to Jericho, Emily and her can still be friends, regardless of the realtionship with Jake, because we so rarely get to see two women be friends when there is a romatic ‘rival’ between them. Heather would totally still be friends with Emily, no matter what.
