Bonus Jericho

February
4

Because I’m trying to keep up with all the Jericho goodness out there, I wrote my daily Jericho fix post yesterday and auto-posted it for this morning before I got an e-mail from Terocious.

It seems that today is Ka4ist’s birthday.

Who’s that? Well, last year, it seemed like Radio Free Jericho might have to shut down. Ka4ist and Maybei (Vicki, a fan from Texas) took over RFJ and saved it.

If that’s not worth a big ol’ Remote Access

Happy Birthday!!!!!

well, then, I don’t know what is.

So anyway, I figured I’d use the news as a chance to launch my second pre-Jericho debate, in honor of Ka4ist. This one is VERY tough:

Jake or Hawkins?

I thought long and hard about this and this was one of the toughest choices I’ve had to make in a long time (I’m not sure exactly what that says about me in the greater scheme of life). Hell, my favorite episode of Season 1 was AKA, which I subtitled, “Jake and Hawkins, a love story.” That episode was almost completely the two best men in Jericho. (Not disparaging Johnston or anything, he came up verrry close behind them. And Stanley lovers, calm down. I’m entitled to my opinion. And I still love Stanley, too.) And both characters are portrayed superbly by Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James.

But when it finally came down to it, I chose Hawkins.

jake.jpgLook, I looooove Jake. And he’s really not too hard on the eyes. Jake’s grown up quite a bit and he’s really redeemed himself in his behavior since the nukes went off.

But imagine what shape Jericho would be in if Hawkins weren’t there. This man is IT. He has a freakin’ nuke in his shed!

From the beginning, we knew that Jake would be a hero for Jericho. He was the prodigal son.

But Hawkins, we were never sure, until AKA. And, even then, we still had to decide if we thought he was telling the truth. It’s since become abundantly aware that he is a good guy, even though there’s still so much we don’t know about him.

hawkinscomputer.jpgHis training, his intelligence, his ability to see when the time is right to strike — and how to do it — make him completely indispensible.

If Jake weren’t in Jericho, someone else would have filled his shoes. As well? Maybe not. As attractively? Most likely not. But someone else would have risen up and filled that role.

If Hawkins weren’t there, I’m afraid the town would be in a lot worse shape. And so would (what’s left of) the United Allied States of America.

I like both characters, and both are essential, but Jake is still something of a loose cannon. Hawkins is not. Jake is the “hero” of the series, but Hawkins is the unsung hero.

    Happy Birthday K4!!

It has been such a pleasure working with K4 at RFJ – super guy!!

    hmmm, Hawkins or Jake?

Hawkins, for sure! I loved the episodes AKA and One Man’s Terrorist.

Hawkins – Lennie James is simply a wonderful actor whose choices are always bold and adventurous. I have seen him register every genuine emotion I can think all while breathing life into a character whom in someone elses hands could have been made of cardboard.

Oh man! Not fair, not fair, not fair!! After AKA, how can you not love both of these characters and how they play off off each other so well? They are one of my favorite TV couples. Yes, Hawkins is indispenible, but without that wonderful chemistry with jake, would he have been able to accomplish as much as he has. Can you imagine Hawkins trying to work with Gray or Eric like he has with Jake? This is almost an impossible choice for me, so…

I guess I’m gonna go ahead and pick Jake, partly because no one else has, and partly because I am all about playing in the shallow-end of the pool, and Jake is pretty. Ha! Sometimes I just can’t help myself.

It was a tough decision cause I think both are needed by Jericho, but I have to go with Jake. His intensity and drive to keep his town safe goes far beyond what most men would do. And if he wasn’t there, I believe Jericho would have fallen to Ravenwood.

That said, I have to add that Hawkins is wonderful too. Another smart man, he is also needed for the town to survive. He and Jake play well off each other and I love every scene with those two together.

First of all…thanks so much for this I look forward to getting to work and reading my Jericho fix for the day (yes I get to work early just to take the time for it). So, I totally agree that this is a VERY tough choice, but when it comes down to it, I’d have to go with Hawkins, mostly because he so consistent.
