Kyle XY: Grounded

February
5

About 15 minutes into last night’s episode of Kyle XY, I realized where I’d seen the plot before: Three’s Company, when Jack was trying to sneak some hottie out of the apartment under Mr. Roper’s nose.

That said, I really enjoyed it. xykids.jpgIt was, to be fair, of a higher quality than the average ep of Three’s Company. And it fully brought itself back to full Kyle mythology by the episode’s end.

First off, the scene toward the beginning during which Amanda freaks out after Kyle takes off his shirt was hilarious. His whole, “your cheeks are flushed. your heart is racing,” while stroking her cheek darting his eyes back and forth in that oh-so-Kyle way. He’s going to get her a thinner blanket because her body temp is rising. LOL. It was actually very sweet, their sleeping in the tub together. But why didn’t he put a new shirt on?

Josh is fantastic. His masturbation jokes were delivered were aplomb. I do believe, however, that pulling the cancer card was completely Andy’s idea. She has completely embraced her inner devious cancer patient.

All I could think when Kyle offered Amanda that banana back in his room was what Josh would have said if he’d seen that.

As for the rest of the effort to get Amanda out of the house, I had to think that it must be a fire hazard to have only one of three bedroom windows that can open. It was, of course, merely a device to keep Amanda — and then Amanda and Jessi — trapped in the bedroom.

OK, so Amanda and Jessi-I-forgot-the-e-at-the-end-of-my-name are in full-fledged bitchfest mode. Jessi truly believes that she, like her progenitor, Sarah, and Kyle, like his progenitor, Adam, truly belong together. It appears she will stop at nothing to achieve that. (Side note, teensy bit spoilerific (but not at all surprising): Jaimie Alexander told E!Online’s Kristin that “Jessi goes back and forth between good and evil all season, mostly because she’s dealing with the fact that no one loves her except for Kyle.”)

Thing is, Jessi’s right, to a degree. Jessi does know all about Kyle and what he can do and where he’s from. No one does understand him like she does. Her problem is that he’s willing to let the Traegers try, but she can only focus on the fact that only Kyle truly understands her. And Kyle also has Declan and had (has?) Foss. She’s had no one but him and Brian Taylor, and the jury’s still out on him. Fact is, Jessi can go from zero to psycho in 1/2 a second flat.

They really set the stage for Amanda’s future suspicions, though, between Jessi’s attitude toward her and then the conversation Kyle had with Ma and Pa Traeger while she was hiding in the closet.

Another sidelight: Nicole tells Kyle to “clear out anything incriminating” from his room. Um, Kyle? That would include Amanda. Oh, and Jessi. And his freak out to Amanda and Jessi was beautiful:

Both of you, please. I’m already grounded, there’s a socialworker investigating my family and I can’t let her find two girls who aren’t supposed to be here, fighting, in my room.

On the other hand, most guys your age would loooove that, Kyle.

It was sooooo cool, though, how he controlled the lights and the appliances in the house as both a guide for Amanda and a distraction for Nicole and Stephen while Amanda slipped past the kitchen. So how perfect was it that Amanda opened the door right into her mother’s face. But what was Mrs. Bloom even doing there?

Anyhow, I have to say I wondered about that social worker. The way she looked at things seemed kind of odd. The moment Nicole Traeger left her alone in the living room, I wondered who she was really working for. Then, I did think that just maybe she was indeed who she appeared to be; I have to say I wasn’t stunned at the end to find out she was working for someone else. But the fact that she’s working for Latnok? Interrrresting.

So that brings me to the questions of the week:

• Did Brian lie about leaving the record for Jessi on the bed? Even though he went to his cabinet and got the 45 out of there, does that mean he didn’t have two copies? And if he didn’t leave the record for her, who did? Latnok?

• Speaking of the record, how does everyone suddenly have a turntable? Hell, tons of people don’t even have CD players anymore, and both Brian and the Traegers have turntables? I find that a bit hard to believe.
• If there really are two copies of the record, which one is the one from the jukebox? Both had D4 written on them, didn’t they?

• What, exactly, is Brian’s connection to Sarah? Was she the unrequited love of his life? Did Adam steal her from him? Did he steal her from Adam? Was she his sister?

• If Brian didn’t leave the record for Kyle, who sent him that e-mail that he never listened to? Was it Jessi? Was it Latnok (it was, after all, the Latnok symbol)? Was it the song? Was it something else?

• Who was watching Jessi leave the Traegers’ house? Latnok? Foss? Adam? Sarah?

• If Jessi could sense that she was being watched, how did she not notice the car that was so close that she was visible in its side-view mirror?

• When is Amanda finally going to bitch-slap her mother? OK, maybe I’m not being fair. Amanda is all that her mom has left in the world. But being a raving, controlling psycho witch is not the way to make it clear that you love her so much. Especially after you sold her piano.

• When are Declan and Lori going to get back together? Though Lori had an excellent point that Declan never asks Kyle for anything in return for his help, but wants her to re-de-virginize with him.

• Where’d Amanda get that outfit? I really liked it. The necklace really worked with it, too. And her haircut has really grown out nicely since the season began.

• Where’d the kids put the bathtub? The beer was stacked in such a way that there was no room for a bathtub in the middle of it, or at least it looked that way. By the way, that was a LOT of beer.

• Exactly how many times are Kyle and Jessi each going to listen to that song?

• Was the social worker actually from the state (besides working for Latnok)? Does she actually have the ability to have Nicole censured and possibly unlicensed? She was, truth be told, kinda right about Nicole stepping over the line emotionally with some of her charges. From the start, I thought it was kinda weird and creepy that she brought Kyle home, even though I’m glad she did b/c otherwise there wouldn’t be a show.
• Who’s shocking return is next week? Foss? Adam? Ballantine?

• Can we get more scenes that are just Kyle, Lori and Josh? I loved that conversation between the trio in Lori’s room while they discussed Amanda’s sleeping arrangements. The show has its best non-mythos moments in these sorts of scenes. Love ‘em. LOVE ‘em.

Bonus: Matt Dallas (Kyle himself, himself) answered Variety’s questionnaire, which included such queries as:

To suck up to the people at Variety.
